Burning Man: The Greatest Event on the Planet - anyone else there?

A new religion has definitely been born... Burning Man is a world beyond anything that I thought, imagined, hoped or expected it to be. I will be there every year for the rest of my life. There is no way to explain it. Not with pictures or stories. It is the greatest event on the planet! Humbled and committed.

If you believe that life is about the party... Burning Man validates this at an awesome level and it just might be for you! It's definitely for me!

Was anyone else from here... There?
I can't believe what I just experienced... Here is one of the best videos that I found from last year. It still does it no justice, but gives a glimpse.

It is the greatest event on the planet!

And these pictures are unbelievable!!!

Looks like fun but not my bag. I'm not really communal or outdoorsy.

DBS.US 09-09-2010 10:39 AM

Looks dangerous, I'm going to stay home and build a tube site.:winkwink:

alexchechs 09-09-2010 10:39 AM

Nope... I'd say most are 30's - 40's. You need some money and an RV... You need to be self sufficient and have your shit together.

TheDoc 09-09-2010 10:42 AM

I'll be going one of these years... my partner has taken the trip and loved it.

2012 09-09-2010 10:43 AM

I've been living this life, my whole life. I'm 39. I totally embraced the hard core punk scene in the '80's... Followed the Dead and lived in a van in the 90's... Still travel all over the country chasing Ween, Widespread, Phish, Butthole Surfers, Wolf Mother... I'll see STS9 and Thievery Corp tomorrow... Been to raves in Amsterdam... Spin records and throw huge parties as a hobby... Love electronic music, style, fashion... This thing is off the chart and not wannabes. There are active participants spending tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw free parties. Free booze. Free music. Unbelievable art installations and art cars... It's only grown with no corporate sponsorships... No fliers. Just big parties! I will support this for sure!!!

HookUPcom 09-09-2010 11:00 AM

oh... and super models! i've never been anywhere and see so many beautiful women... in fishnets and leather and feathers... topless... body paint... body suits... I don't know where they came from... but there are more gorgeous women there than any other event I've ever been too!

CaptainHowdy 09-09-2010 11:05 AM

Looks primitive, do people greet by sniffing their asses??

DBS.US 09-09-2010 11:05 AM

It's not a big free party, Tickets for Burning Man 2010 are $300/$360 http://tickets.burningman.com/

HookUPcom 09-09-2010 11:18 AM

So that pays for the land, entrance, marketing, cleanup porta-pots, etc.

There are thousands of tents, bars, restaurants, throwing massive parties...

There are clubs with hundred foot high speaker towers, video displays, dj's dancing girls and they are serving Vodka Redbulls, Vodka Tonics as fast as they can with 10+ bartenders. There are camps and clubs spending tens of thousands of dollars a day dishing out Vodka... It doesn't make sense.

I went to one like 5 star Persian Tent where they were serving pickled cucumber wrapped - mozzarella and cherry tomatoes with a vinaigrette appetizers and Martinis. And they had ice in every drink till 5am.

The parties run 24 hours a day. The $300 doesn't pay for that... That's the participants raising money or putting their own money into these parties.

Welcome to 1998.

fuzebox 09-09-2010 11:28 AM

If you spot him, say hi to my buddy Halcyon. He may be riding a kids bicycle.

But be warned, he'll likely hug you.

Yes, I told my daughter, "... I'm sorry... I'm never going to grow up."
She said, "That's ok... You just have to find someone that is alright with that."

So... I'm working on that! I think I just met her, but she flew away.

The local burner crew is just starting to pour back into town and the stories and starting to pour in. I'll probably be down next year as the local camp grows yearly. I think almost 30 made drive south this time around. Everybody with the crazy bicycles, hah. One buddy has been talking of building a summer time ski/snowboard park with a run in and a jump, box/rails, and trucking it down so there can be a jib park in the desert. If construction goes down on this project, I'll put an effort in to try and make it out due to the sheer epicness of the potential camp. Ya, it's a ski bum crew, lol. I hear the sand and wind was going off for the last few days...

I had a 1978 jacked up IH Scout and a 1979 Bronco with 33" mudders... Now I have a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck... I'd go there too!

It's different.

Right? - I had the Richest Man in Babylon on Vinyl and thought that they were just like 2 guys doing everything electronically and then I saw 'em and there were like 18 people on stage... or more... they frickin' rock! And Red Rocks... the most beautiful amphitheater on the planet!

Semi-Retired-Dave 09-09-2010 01:14 PM

Great Video. Woodstock all over again. No rules no regulations. Looks like fun.

John-ACWM 09-09-2010 01:23 PM

WOW thanks for the recommendation!

fatfoo 09-09-2010 01:26 PM

The art in the url link is impressive. I like this photograph:
There is something very liberating about it.
The person has a mask instead of showing a real face.

anyone saw the "Malcolm in the Middle" episode where they go to Burning Man? i would be like their father - lol

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 09-09-2010 01:39 PM

I expected to hear that it was just a giant drug fest, but apparently it's pretty chill from what I'm told, unless you want it to be a giant drugfest, in which case you can easily turn it into one of those too. Our "big" festival up here Shambhala is just a fucking cesspool of chemicals, haha...

The thing is, there is absolutely no currency exchange going on... So you don't have any vendors at all, or dealers walking around, "Doses... Molly... Liquid...Mushrooms."

Those that want it, bring it. Those that didn't might be able to find it... But it's not being sold. It's got to be given away for free. Which is a major difference. And a major difference in clientele.

SomeCreep 09-09-2010 04:27 PM

eh, yeah looks alright. I would've thought that was much cooler when I was 20.

GAMMA303 09-09-2010 04:32 PM

This was my 8th year at Burning Man.

Where were you camped this year Hookup? I was at 945 & E.

Its nearly impossible to explain burning man to those that haven't been and it also goes without saying that its not for everyone. If someone seems interested then I suggest they go read the website and look at all the photos.

Every years an adventure and I'm already planning next years trip.

:)

PS this being your first year you got it very lucky. This was the best weather I've seen out there in all my years of going.

DaddyHalbucks 09-09-2010 07:06 PM

Burning Man looks interesting.

How HOT does it get during the day? Does the night cool off much?

HookUPcom 09-10-2010 10:34 AM

Nice work Gamma! 8 years... No, it's not for everyone... I was at J 6:45 - a world away from you!

I was out with about 10 people last night that were there... So fun! I'll try and remember you next year and catch up! Cheers. -

_Richard_ 09-10-2010 10:38 AM

always wanted to go, might next year

Near 100 degrees F during the day, and 52 at night... Huge swing.
