4GB CSV file won't open in excel :(

I have a 300k line 4GB CSV file that will not open in neither excel 2003 or 2010. I double click or file open it and excel will just open up a blank DB. Any advise? Won't open in notepad either. I am thinking I can open it in a better text editor and copy and paste it in quarters but there must be an easier way and this will cause problems when I save it and reopen it. Hope someone can help.

How much RAM you got?

tical 10-03-2010 07:56 PM

split the file into multiple parts

Adam_M 10-03-2010 07:59 PM

Also maybe try in open office

Excel has a limit of about 65k lines (2^16). Look it up. I found it out a few weeks ago. annoying but true.

Import it into a relational DB, make your changes then export back to CSV (if you must).

I have 8GB ram, I5.

Excel 2010 can open a million rows apparently.

How do I split the file into multiple parts?

Google "CSV splitter"

ladida 10-03-2010 08:21 PM

Ultraedit or notepad++

HighEnergy 10-03-2010 08:25 PM

An easy to use splitter
It's a zipped exe but the source files are easy to scan.
downloads/csv-splitter-1.1.zip

Use Microsoft Access to open the database.

32 bit system here, 4gb ram, i5, so almost identical. I've opened 10GB in ultraedit before.

I know you have full excel but maybe you could try a lightweight version - excel viewer or smth..find it on google..

ok, now I seriously hate you - wtf!!!! this must be a monster machine

BestXXXPorn 10-04-2010 06:37 AM

Why in the world would you ever want to open a 4GB CSV in Excel?

I'd recommend importing it into a relational DB if you want to actually be able to DO anything with it, LOL

woj 10-04-2010 07:01 AM

If you want I can write a quick script for a few bucks to split the 4GB file into 10 smaller files... icq: 33375924

u-Bob 10-04-2010 07:04 AM

try ultraedit. That's what I use when handling big files.

mkx 10-04-2010 07:04 AM

notepad++ opened it but froze for a few minutes everytime I tried to copy a portion of it. and I can only copy 2 or 3% of it without getting a too big for clipboard message, not going to copy it into 50 pcs. So theres no other program other than csv splitter that will split this into 4 pcs? CSV splitter split it into 1 467 kb file.

Helix 10-04-2010 08:21 AM

Try CSVed. I have used it for csv files 1gig +
