i like the popular songs like Roam or Love Shack - many other songs were too weird for me

Vjo 10-07-2010 02:35 PM

Nice pic and list. Been meaning to check out some new B-52's. Couple there I havnt heard.

They were hot doing Channel Z on SNL around 1990. YT has the rehearsal but only place I have seen the vid is on one of my VCR tapes. :)

PornMD 10-07-2010 02:41 PM

B-52s will always be known for "the guy from the B-52s". BTW, is that pic supposed to resemble Scooby Doo or not? If not, that's hilarious.

Rock Lobster not at #1 makes Jew Cat a sad Jew Cat...

mesopotamia could be the best song ever done.

My man is back :)

Why is Private Idaho at the bottom and why did you have to add an extra slot for it to be extra at the bottom?

p.s. Thank you for knowing they used to be a good band.

Rock Lobster is good but it is in many ways wacky good rather than quality. I sort of see it as the song that people that only really know Love Shack will also like. Which doesn't make it bad - I like it - just not as good as other songs they have done.

the b-52s were my introduction into alternative, back when alternative was alt- 1979.

growing up in redneck texas, riding around in a pick up truck, dipping skoal and drinking schlitz & cranking rocklobster = good times!

i was going to just do the top 10, but private idaho is pretty much their best mainstream track so i figured i'd include it. i've never really dug their pop/popular songs as much.

I was born in '76. So, I came to know of them through the more popular (ie chance to cash a royalty check) period. However, as I got into more alternative music as I got older I discovered their older stuff. I am an R.E.M. fan and it was through their championing of B-52s I checked out the 'punkier' stuff and loved it. Why they then went and worked together on the worst R.E.M. song ever, I will never know.

I just found it incredibly entertaining in a way that made me want to drop acid.

it really is a well-done song. killer crescendo

Ayla_SquareTurtle 10-08-2010 10:16 AM

What I like about Rock Lobster is that they managed to make a totally ridiculous and wacky song that still fuckin ROCKS!

B. 81 in redneck TX here, intro'd to the B-52's by my parents, who also introduced me to much of the good music I still listen to today.

JustDaveXxx 10-08-2010 10:17 AM

B-52's were very strange, but their style and music worked so well. I didnt like them at 1st, but warmed up to the rather quickly. Very different seems to work.

Nice thread Dyna Mo. Thanks for the flash back:thumbsup

And you look great in your Avatar dude:thumbsup

this was actually what got me interested in more b52s beyond love shack a few years ago. :1orglaugh

I understand them working together. They are both from the same era of alternative music and from the same part of the world. They are both capable of writing and producing fantastic songs but instead did a seriously crap one.

Fred has done some fairly crazy solo stuff over the years too...one wacky ass man.

Oh, I like it a lot. Just not more than the ones above it on the list. Then, I have never done any drugs much less acid. I am considering starting.

I remember those days. Only I grew up in southwest Missouri and left the Skoal dipping to the boys (not to say I never accidentally grabbed a spit beer can. Ewww)

You inspired me. Had housework to do tonight so I added a new B-52's station on Pandora. Just finished dancing to "Give me back my boyfriend". I suddenly feel like a teenager again :thumbsup

Honez 10-08-2010 10:19 PM

I meant "Give me back my man". No idea why I typed 'boyfriend'. Maybe I was thinking about the asshat I was dating back in '80? :)

tony286 10-08-2010 10:24 PM

A great band.

ottopottomouse 10-09-2010 03:54 AM

Never heard of any of them. Only B-52s song I know is Love Shack.

CarlosTheGaucho 10-09-2010 04:01 AM

Very Cool thread, I was just thinking about looking into their music while driving a while back.

Actually Kate Pierson's vocals in Iggy Pop's Candy is what played on repeat when I lost my virginity, so it's a must.

:)

Well, consider this your chance to learn :)

Not, that I can't fully get into some loud Love Shack singing when booze is involved.

They're from the same town-
Athens, Georgia which was home to a pretty big new wave rock explosion late 70's - 80's-
B-52s, Ravenstone, Pylon, Widespread Panic, Indigo Girls, Love Tractor, the Georgia Satellites,Flat Duo Jets,Hillbilly Frankenstein and R.E.M. - all from Athens.

btw if you can check out the Flat Duo Jets and Hillbilly Frankenstein....crazy good stuff.

i found the documentary- Athens Georgia Inside:Out
Great documentary with some really rare tunes. Some of the best REM i've ever heard.

Sarah_Jayne 10-09-2010 06:57 AM

Yup, I am an R.E.M. nut so I know a bit about Athens. I really would like to go there someday since so many bands I have enjoyed come from there. My uncle doesn't live too far away. So, I suppose I really should make that happen.

R.E.M. have also worked with the Indigo Girls...I had a friend that used to listen to them a lot and one song came on and while none of them were singing I just had this weird feeling and asked 'are R.E.M. on this track? A few minutes later Stipe starts to sing but weirdly, it was Buck's playing that had some how set off my 'R.E.M. radar'.

Barry-xlovecam 10-09-2010 07:20 AM

I never thought "Private Idaho" to be "mainstream" ... anyway, one of my favorite B52's

Talking Heads, Devo ? Same genre and era ...

<-- very traumatized.
