Nifty Stats Pro - Thanks For the Porn Popup...

Monday morning I noticed an annoying full page porn popup coming up about every hour.

So I run Spybot and nothing comes up. After reading for a few hours about this "virus" that kept popping up I just thought I was wasting too much time on it.

I then backed up my files/projects to my laptop, about 90gb worth of data... taking about 2 hours to transfer back and forth between the laptop and pc.

I then formatted and installed a clean version of Windows 7. Followed by Visual Studio, Sql Server, Office, all the goodies etc... Setting up a development machine is not as simple as sticking in a restore disc... So basically took a perfectly running system and redid it losing a full days worth of work.

Much to my dismay, this morning I got the damn popup again. I spent another hour or so looking up what this popup could be... I've never seen spyware survive a clean install, I was amazed.

The next time the popup came up, I decided to take a closer look at it.

Here is the pop as it displays, always a different ad, always fullscreen:

First thing I noticed, was that it wasn't an internet explorer window... hmmm, so I looked for the process in task manager:

Next I clicked on "Go To Process"... and I see this as the selected process for this popup:

I thought it was just a mistake and decided to try again and got the same process. So I ended the process and guess what, the popup closed...

A second later the process opened again and the popup came back...

Ok so I closed Nifty Stats Pro and the popup process... hmmm no pop anymore...

So I paid $200 for the full version of Nifty Stats Pro, and now I have a popup I thought was a virus forcing me to do a clean install on my machine and lose a full day's work.

Thanks guys...

Hey if they knew about it... why not send an email out?

I understand things can get messed up in code trust me, but let people know about it before they waste A LOT of time on nothing.

That sucks that you went to the trouble of doing a full reinstall. What a pain that must have been.

amateurbfs 11-10-2010 11:19 AM

statsremote ftw. i tried to signup to nifty and the login info doesn't work.

Jason Voorhees 11-10-2010 11:47 AM

Nifty has gone down hill.. I'd just get a refund and go for StatsRemote. :2 cents:

FlexxAeon 11-10-2010 11:52 AM

i hit them up about it yesterday - via email (gasp)

found out it was caused by a specific sponsor. starlightbucks was the culprit. i stopped that download and popups were gone

got an email from them today saying that the issue is fixed

Hello,
the following sponsor has started to display a popup console while checking the stats, the issue was reported to us and we have created a new version of Nifty Stats Pro with a better pop up blocker. Therefore please update your copy of Nifty Stats.

iSpyCams 11-10-2010 12:50 PM

They probably get those stats by opening a hidden browser window. If that browser window opens a page with a pop-up that they are not equipped to suppress, you get a pop-up.

With a program like nifty stats, you are trying to browse the web without browsing the web. It's not surprising that there would be occasional issues.

Looks like it's stable with no popups now Jenna :)

Guess my development machine will do good with a clean OS on it :1orglaugh

Wow, that sucks.

AZNNC 11-10-2010 01:24 PM

Formatting for no reason sucks.
But don't you always feel a little better after? :)

kektex 11-10-2010 01:45 PM

Last time I did a full format I made an image of my OS with all windows updates, programs i almost never update like autocad, office, etc. Now I can just restore it with everything installed. Takes like thirty minutes.

Constantly changing PST file from outlook, dev projects, etc... are a pain :(

This time I disagree with you, I think its 100% OK to post this on boards. The free version of Nifty Stats was a spam hell for me, however I loved the product when it was released, but over the months it became spammy and forced me to buy the full version. Because of the so many annoying experiences I gave a try to their competition StatsRemote, and I will keep using SR now as I love it! :pimp

HomerSimpson 11-10-2010 02:21 PM

looks to me that the case is closed ...

docputer 11-10-2010 03:02 PM

I have been chasing that for a couple days too. I tried several malware programs, and changed anti virus programs.

fallenmuffin 11-10-2010 03:04 PM

Quick update on their side. +1 for Nifty Stats. I use the pro version and am pretty satisfied with it.

icymelon 11-10-2010 03:06 PM

The pro version is ad free, this was a glitch caused by an affiliate program
