FDA to ban Caffeine / Alcohol Drinks

Idiocy abound:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/16...ex.html?hpt=T2

Maybe we should ban rum and cokes too? Redbull Vodkas? Irish coffees? Might as well shut down all the bars!

"Let these rulings serve as a warning to anyone who tried to peddle dangerous and toxic brews to our children. Do it and we will shut you down," Schumer, D-New York, said in the statement.

What a douche... since when is it legal to sell alcoholic drinks to kids?

marketsmart 11-17-2010 08:42 AM

"But Schumer, in a statement issued to the media, said the FDA will rule that caffeine is an unsafe additive to alcoholic beverages, effectively banning them from the U.S. market."

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

thank god the FDA protects us from these things...

i guess aspartame must have slipped through the cracks...

as well as hundreds of other chemicals they allow in our food sources that are known carcinogens...

great job FDA... :thumbsup

i bet if four loco was owned by coca cola, we wouldnt be having this discussion....

It is actually apparently really dangerous to mix redbull with vodka. At bars and nightclubs here they won't even mix the two for you. They give you a glass with vodka at the bottom and hand you the can to fill it up yourself so that it is your responsibility. Alcohol thins the blood and redbull increases blood pressure putting you at risk of a heart attack or some shit like that.

Phoenix 11-17-2010 08:45 AM

redbull and vodka is dangerous...and so is too much caffeine and alcohol

haha i'm not saying that doesn't happen, but it never happens around here. i'm betting 1% of the bars/clubs do that

fatfoo 11-17-2010 08:49 AM

Alcohol can be dangerous. It can be very dangerous to mix alcohol with some other substances. I heard that mixing alcohol with cocaine could result in death. Be careful! Mixing alcohol with smoke increases harm to health. Caffeine is probably one of the less harmful substances.

Cyber Fucker 11-17-2010 09:01 AM

Warning: tea and chocolate also contain caffeine. Sometimes I feel happy I don't live in the USA.

minicivan 11-17-2010 09:04 AM

Those damn Republicans!

oh...

candyflip 11-17-2010 09:06 AM

The company they're targeting is local to me I guess. They announced today that they will just be removing the caffeine and carbonation.

So now they're pretty much going to be selling Alcoholic Kool Aid, which seems like it might be MORE appealing to kids. :1orglaugh

Blood thinning is just making it so it doesn't clot very easily it doesn't actually get watered down. Might be a problem if you are in a stabby club though.

CaptainHowdy 11-17-2010 09:24 AM

Get out of the U.S.!

Sounds like it allows you to get drunker than you realize.

Serge Litehead 11-17-2010 09:44 AM

life is dangerous, lets ban it too while we're at it

brassmonkey 11-17-2010 09:45 AM

let them drink it. they let people smoke and drink which is deadly

Tom_PM 11-17-2010 09:49 AM

How about banning cigarettes? Too great a loss of revenue?

some of us don't really drink, and caffeine and booze has been getting us by for some time.

you can pry my rum and coke from my cold dead fingers

PR_Glen 11-17-2010 10:27 AM

caffeine and aspartame beverages are just about the most abundantly consumed product in north america... if either of them were dangerous the average life expectancy would become 45 over night.

In fact there is no real evidence that either is harmful to you at all, one keeps you up at night sometimes and the other is the most frequently studied food additive of all time. if they found anything dangerous in it, we would know by now...

This just in, walking is dangerous Democrats ban it. Obama signs a law forcing all Americans to buy a hoveround. If you do not buy the hoveround you will be fined erm taxed.

Fap 11-17-2010 10:40 AM

they say this every year

ottopottomouse 11-17-2010 10:44 AM

Birthdays are dangerous too. The more you have had the more likely you are to die.

magicmike 11-17-2010 10:49 AM

I drank way too many vodka redbulls in Phoenix years back, never again.

Relentless 11-17-2010 10:49 AM

Caffeine and alcohol is so low brow...

The trendy thing these days is mixing Coumadin & Absinthe :1orglaugh

Coup 11-17-2010 11:44 AM

good. anything that poisons the minds of the people should be eliminated.

96ukssob 11-17-2010 11:53 AM

they are referring to malt liquor/beer that is caffeinated... specifically the one "Four Loco"

it has a pretty good amount of caffeine per can, which is already 12% abv. you get a couple of morons who get out of control and have a heart attack because they drank to much and are to wired to know the difference.

this happens to me with redbull and vodka. my brain is saying "keep going!!!!!" while my body is saying "noooooo!"

pornguy 11-17-2010 11:53 AM

I think there have been some recent deaths linked to the mixture.

Robbie 11-17-2010 12:18 PM

Jesus.

Just more of the BULLSHIT that our govt. is doing and getting paid for by our tax dollars.

Let's see...for centuries and centuries people mixed alcohol with coffee.

Now it's no good?

And what does that mean if you want a whiskey and coke? Or a seven and seven?

Or what if I go on a drinking binge and then go drink a few cups of coffee to sober up?

This is goddamn ridiculous. I've said it over and over and I'll repeat it again...If our founding fathers were to come back to life they would go to Washington and get the nearest rope and the closest tree and start hanging the idiots we call our "govt."

I'm so goddamn sick of Washington D.C. "protecting" me. How did people EVER get along in the past without the nanny state coddling us like newborn babies.

Vendzilla 11-17-2010 12:27 PM

Get use to it everyone, Obama doesn't want us to have freedom of choice
Last year he gave more power to the FDA and they banned fruit flavored rolling papers and made it illegal to ship cigarettes in the mail

energy drinks don't just contain the same kind of caffine that coffee does. look up guarana. the actual caffine content in one energy drink can be as much as 7-8 cups of coffe as well.

i am all for freedom of choice. its hilarious that they ban this but allow cigarettes but the question i ask is why are so many people drinking so much of this crap? its about one of the worst things you could drink, health wise. especially with kids drinking it (i'm not talking about alcoholic ones but just energy drinks in general) what will be the result to their health in 10 years time.

Brujah 11-17-2010 01:29 PM

Canada has some rules about what kind of drinks can contain caffeine too don't they? Like, Mt Dew can't because it is a citrus drink? Scandinavian countries also have some strict rules about caffeine if I recall.

The article says some states (New York, Washington, Utah, Michigan and Oklahoma) have banned it already. Why have they? Were they wrong to do so?

Yes they were wrong to do so (in my eyes) but they DO have the authority as they ARE states and all powers not specifically enumerated to the federal government fall to the state... not that the federal government even REMOTELY pays attention to their own limits though, hahha

WiredGuy 11-17-2010 04:34 PM

What about spanish coffees and simple things like coffee/armaretto? Does the FDA plan on stopping restaurants/bars from serving these too?
WG

Vendzilla 11-17-2010 04:38 PM

This will creat a black market for boozed up energy drinks, speak easy's are first, the russian mob will get involved and they will have 12 year old kids selling it on the street corners

comeplay 11-17-2010 04:41 PM

Coming soon to a 7-11 near you.. Half full "FOUR" malt liquor cans that are 25oz's AND RIGHT NEXT TO IT IN THE COOLER 12 oz "LOKO" energy drinks

eroticsexxx 11-17-2010 04:58 PM

Just to give a bit of reference to this debate. I do believe that some persons are jumping to conclusions.

The drink that is being banned has caused teenagers to drop down dead from heart attacks.

dyna mo 11-17-2010 05:00 PM

-Some college kids mixed it (it's already 12% alc) with liquor and drank who knows how much and hospitalized themselves.
-Some kid drank 4 of them and committed suicide.
-Watched a video of some political figure drinking 2 1/2 of them in an hour to apparently "prove something". He ended up puking (nahhh realllyyy??) and they reported it as being a problem with the drink itself and not the fact that he FORCED DOWN 2 1/2 OF THEM IN AN HOUR.

I fail to see where any of these have anything to do with the drink itself. Sound like personal problems to me.

Seriously. I'm so tired of this shit.

dyna mo 11-17-2010 05:27 PM

we should get rid of stop signs too!

JD 11-17-2010 05:38 PM

it's not the simple fact that there's caffeine and alcohol in it. It's the fact that it's being marketed on the sly to youth/college kids/etc who already drink too much. It's 12% alcohol and a crap load of caffeine you can't tell me that's safe.

People are drinking several of them in an evening because the caffeine counteracting the drowsy effect of the alcohol and that leads them to potentially ending up with alcohol poisoning and death. It's know as blackout in a can for christs sake...

These drinks should be either illegal or not caffeinated it's that easy.

dyna mo 11-17-2010 05:41 PM

unban Epinephrine and load that shit up in there too!

Sarah_Jayne 11-17-2010 06:14 PM

I don't like the banning of things but I will say that of of the scariest moments I have witnessed in recent years was a friend crashing down very hard after a night on redbull and vodka.

Dead 11-17-2010 06:24 PM

Keep my dope illegal and I will never have to worry about the government fucking up the chemical make-up that makes me happy!!! Don't legalize, er I mean don't give the feds control over the simple pleasures I enjoy and am quite happy knowing there isn't a sticker warning me of the ill fate I will endure due to prolong use.. Let these fucks keep messing with ones that make their findings public. Stupid people should not do drugs, Period
