Kuwait bans use of DSLR cameras?

Does anyone know what's behind Kuwait banning the use of DSLR cameras for anyone not a member of the press? I wonder if it has to do with the video features of DSLRs.

:Oh crap

Twoface31 11-23-2010 09:21 PM

oh shot they are so fuck...........

From the article in the Kuwaiti Times it sounds like there has been issues in public with people being "scared" of the big cameras when taking pictures of strangers, since they thought people are spying on them or something... weird

Countries have odd laws. While we consider a camera or taking a picture as no big deal, in some countries it's a huge deal - You might be "stealing their soul" or something.

In the Dominican Republic it's illegally to shoot any nude / topless photography of Dominican Republic citizens. Any other nationality and they don't care.

BIGTYMER 11-24-2010 01:04 AM

What do you expect from them?

most of the DSLR cameras DON'T have video modes, while almost 100% of the latest compact digital cameras do

so, no, it's not that they are trying to prevent people from taking pictures or recording videos, probably some sheik’s wife got scared by a big bad lens pointed at her and this brought the new law :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Davy 11-24-2010 07:18 AM

I guess they don't like tourists, huh?
What the fuck is their reason to do this?
There's some stupid backwards people in this world...

It reminds me of the Albanians.
Drove through Albania this summer. Firstly, they throw their trash right next to the street in a beautiful scenery (and then burn it if it gets too much). But that's not what struck me most.
The Albanian roads are built with little to no rest places next to the roads. You drive along the coast line and have no place at all to stop and snap some pictures. I've seen people stop in the middle of the road to take some pics.
The Albanian road makers where just concerned with getting people through their country. Compared that with Greece where there's frequent parking spots with little shrines everywhere.

yep they are drilling oil like mad and are full of $$$
but in countries such as Kuwait or Lybia
some rules are VERY strict and must not be broken
such as alcohol use and other muslim related stuff..

But they are literally loaded with cash.

These countries work like this:

export
- oil (only), nothing else. (while it lasts)

import
- everything (educated people, workers, hq goods, medical people.... everything!)

why?
- because they are rich and lazy as fuck :)

The Arabs also buy lots of properties and businesses overseas. Plus lend money to countries like the US. They know when the oil runs out they will need some bargaining power. Will the West grab it all back?

As for this law. It's pointless unless they just don't like big DSLR's whose to tell the difference from an image on a SLR or a good small camera?

Things that make ya go, hmmmmm...

RazorSharpe 11-24-2010 08:53 AM

Not sure why everyone has their knickers in a twist and branding an entire country retarded or brainless. This action was taken by government officials and has left even local photographers stumped. I get it though, none of us lives in a country where our government officials make up stupid laws .....

<!== Excerpt from article
There's little or no word from the Kuwaiti government on why it has taken such drastic action, and the Kuwait Times says that the move has baffled the Kuwaiti youth and local artists. Many wonder what to do with their expensive cameras now that they can't use them in public, and are bemused as to why such laws have been implemented.

Comparing Albania to Greece? LOL.. :1orglaugh

I think missing rest places and burning trash outdoors are the least important problems the country has.

DiF0r 11-24-2010 11:32 AM

they're full of shit

HighlyIntoxicated 11-24-2010 11:47 AM

They probably banned them because they are large enough to fit a miniature gun inside, and can be used discreetly by assassins.

lol

An yet another backwards law...

Indian village bans cell phones for unwed women
November 24, 2010

LUCKNOW, India ? A northern Indian village has banned unmarried women from using cell phones for fear they will arrange forbidden marriages that are often punished by death, a local official said Wednesday.

The Lank village council decided unmarried boys could use mobile phones, but only under parental supervision, council member Satish Tyagi said. Local women's rights group criticized the measure as backward and unfair.

Marriages between members of the same clan are forbidden under Hindu custom in some parts of north India, where unions are traditionally arranged by families. In conservative rural areas, families sometimes mete out extreme punishments, including so-called honor killings, for those who violate marriage taboos. In some cases, village councils themselves have ordered the punishments, though police often intervene to stop them.

The Lank village council feared young men and women were secretly calling one another to arrange forbidden elopements.
