RIP K-9 Schultz - Killed in the Line of Duty

My in-laws and my kids were traveling back from PA last night on Route 42. Got a texted from them saying they are in "stand still" traffic because of an accident.

I find out this morning the accident wasn't an accident but a murder of a K-9 police officer named Schultz. K-9 Schultz was apprehending a suspect when the suspect threw K-9 Schultz into on coming traffic killing him instantly.

The arrival and honor guard procession of K-9 Schultz and the Pickard Family video is on Facebook.

=====================
GLOUCESTER TWP. ? Schultz, a police K-9, died in the line of duty here Tuesday night when a robbery suspect threw the dog into traffic on Route 42, authorities said.

The suspect then fled across the divided highway, setting off an intense search that continued into the evening in the Blackwood section.

"This is a sad loss," said Gloucester Township Police Chief Harry Earle, noting the dog's death showed the danger that accompanies police work. "We think very highly of our K-9s. They are members of our department."

The incident began around 7:10 p.m., when two men robbed the Lucky Dragon restaurant in the 400 block of East Church Street, then fled on foot, Earle said. A township police officer and the K-9 dog soon spotted one suspect in a wooded area along the southbound lanes of the nearby highway.

"The dog was released to make the apprehension, but during the apprehension the suspect threw the dog into traffic," Earle said. "When you hear that, it makes it even more tragic."

The two suspects remained at large at 10:30 p.m.

Township residents reported an all-out manhunt, with helicopters hovering overhead and officers ordering people to stay inside their homes. Police established a command post at Highland Regional High School, Earle said.

The township police department has three K-9s, and Earle did not immediately identify the one that died.

"The dog has a family in a sense," he said. "I want to make sure that notifications are made."

"This K-9 has served us well in many apprehensions and in interactions with the community, including local children," he added.

Earle said it was too soon to say how the police department would mark the dog's loss. But, he said, "We want to honor him."

RIP K-9 Schultz

It seems the attack dog was not strong enough.

If there's video footage of this, all I can say is EPIC. Whoever the guy is that threw the dog is a living legend, a bright light to all future criminals who hope to get away from police and their k-9 units.

Side note, I'm going to be the first to say that the guy didn't actually throw the dog into traffic, rather it was more or less an accident that was blamed on him.

yeah..it was probably a german shepherd...you'd have to be a ninja to be able to keep that dog from getting you and being able to throw it anywhere

He'll definitely get a serious beating by the cops, just in the corner where the cameras don't catch the action :thumbsup

I love dogs too... and i'm not really condoning hurting them, but if a dog attacked me? bit into my arm, my leg or anything else on me? I'd kill it without flinching... and wouldn't feel bad about it either.

The real crime is using dogs to apprehend anyone...

bronco67 12-01-2010 09:49 AM

Damn, I love Schultz.

If a cop were chasing you on the side of a highway, tackled you and started beating you with his fist would you throw him into on coming traffic?

marketsmart 12-01-2010 09:58 AM

That's really sad, man. I saw a German Shepard get smoked on a highway once. A car stopped on the side of the road for some reason. Owner got out. Dog jumped out and started running down the road, owner chasing after it. Then in decided to head into traffic and it was screeching tires and break lights everywhere. Not a pretty sight.

Yes, there will be murder charges filed if the guy is caught.

It is called resisting arrest. There are no accidents when you are fighting with a cop. You hurt/kill the cop, be prepared to face the consequences. :2 cents:

You're right, they should just shoot suspects.

Tom_PM 12-01-2010 10:51 AM

Man, when a k9 or cop has got their teeth on you or close enough, it's time to freaking lay down and spread your limbs, dontcha think?

It's a tool, and used as less of a risk than having a policeman shot in the face and having to tell his wife afterwards.

Fuck knows how anybody throws an angry German Shepherd anywhere. Pinocchio stretched the truth a bit less.
