Bookmark question

I just added a bookmark button on my site using Javascript.

I've been told that it can fuck up some people browsers like nutscrape and opera and search engines punish you for it.

Just wondered if this is correct, what I should do and is it worth having a "bookmark us" button

I have to change my script, it works fine in explorer. But in netscape the "bookmark this site" text doesnt show up at all. I have seen scripts that are netscape safe they will tell the surfer to push CTRL D to bookmark your site in place of the bookmark link. Check out http://www.hotscripts.com they should have some stuff.
