Proxypass config advice?
I'm curious whether any Proxypass users enable the directive "PrxShapeBW" to throttle real time bandwidth? I don't have it enabled but since it supposedly effects server performance I wanted to know what to expect and if it works.
I thought throttling connections was supposed to stop huge spikes in bandwidth but for me it doesn't. |

I think that'll annoy members more than it helps, though FIOS may change that in time.
You really don't want to force your members to wait while stuff downloads, I don't think, as much as you want to prevent bandwidth wasted on rippers by controlling how much they download over a period of time, such as a few hours or a few days. You want to control the the bad guys who are burning up a lot of bandwidth, who don't care if one video is a little slower, because they aren't sitting there waiting for it anyway - they are out at dinner while their ripper does it's work. If a good guy has a real fast connection, say one marketed as 10 Mbps but it gets say 8 Mbps in real life, that'll hit you with a little bandwidth, but only for a minute and a half to download a 100MB video, then he's done for a while, and he's happy that your site is fast. More importantly, perhaps he'll only use his "share" of your available bandwidth since the server automatically balances the bandwidth usage across connections. I'm more concerned about the bad guy who queues up 200 videos, download ten at a time using ten connections, and therefore ten times his share of the bandwidth, and leaves it running all night. These are the ideas we used for Throttlebox.
