Is there a way of getting a counter for each banner? Let's say I have 4 banner spots on my page. Currently they rotate, I have a pool of banners for each spot and they change with every refresh. I'd like to know if there's a way of putting a counter for that banner position, or even better for the banner itself.

I've seen some affiliate programs that rate their banners by their success, so it must be possible.

Is this done through server logs, a php counter, java?

you can easily track which banner spot is being clicked with a trading script.

If you have different links for each banner that is rotated than you can easily track each banner for each banner spot with a trading script too.
