What do you tell people? (Family, friends, new acquaintances)

This question has been boggling my mind since I started. None of my family knows that I work with adult material. Well only like 2 cousins and only like 3 other people know because they found folders of websites psds and pictures and stuff so there was no other way to tell them.

How do you guys deal with this? Alot of you have been in this industry for a while. I know if I tell my family and knowing their "morals" I would probably be shamed and baptized like 10394039 times.

I've told my family I am a programmer, internet marketer and webmaster. I don't deal exclusively with porn so technically I am telling the truth.

Friends and acquaintances I tell the truth. If they get offended because I sell porn then they probably aren't the kind of person I want to be around anyway.

Simply be honest with them, more often than not, it's a great ice breaker especially when it comes to telling your friends or acquaintances. And I tend to get dates easier with girls when they find out I'm in the adult and mmorpg industry.

You'll be surprise that we live in a society nowdays where the all mighty dollar is more important than morals. When they see what you drive, and the size of home you live in, they are willing to overlook the fact that you obtain part of your success financially due to the Adult industry. Besides the adult industry was taboo for so long but recently, it has become more readily accepted in the mainstream, you will be surprise how well individuals accept the fact that you are associated in the adult industry.

As far as family is concerned, that's a whole different story, as a Catholic, it took some time for my family to get used to the idea. But they came around and fully support my lifestyle.

Thanks man that's exactly what I wanted to hear >_>. Specially me that lives in Miami, one of the porn capitals and 50% of family is Catholic and other 50% is Christian.

Interesting. I've been looking into starting up this line of business for a bit, in the course of getting ready to start some bidness, I've told a couple friends (only friends) and I actually lost my best friend just mentioning I was interested in the adult industry.

So, be prepared for some flak, it'll happen.

I told my friends and family the truth, directly when i started with this business.
My mother was a little confused because she didnt know anything about internet, seo, html and those stuff. I told her that she can sit beside me when i am working. Of course on this day i made more things like, linktrade, html code working, serverthings. There was not very much porn on the screen on this day. Sure a little bit texting and cutting pictures but not very much. After this day she was no more confused about my work and what should i say now she got me already three workers. hehe

Only one of my further friends dont like to talk to me anymore because of my work. But its this kind of person which dont like money or thinking about money. She is thinking when everybody has the same money everybody is happy.
Wel its not that kind of person what i like to have around me. My friends knows almost how much i earn and that i work hard to increase my income.

Not much of a best friend, better off with a dog

To close friends and family I just tell them I sell porn, explaining I'm not a pornstar but just promote other peoples stuff on SE's.

Living in a country where its supposedly illegal to view porn I'm carefull when meeting new people or even telling most people I know what I do, web design, SEO or internet marketing usually gets me through.
But it can be embarrassing when at a party with well to do'ers when someone asks and a mate jumps in and blurts "does he fuck! he's a fucking porn baron", then I say that I've done some promoting of Playboy, being well known and soft that usually gets me sorted.

If your worried and want to hide it say something thats not well understood and boring, like "analyzing search engine algorithms and latest traffic patterns in relation to the trends of gobal social acceptance of internet use, its soo boring really", only a complete twat would be interested in hearing more.

I suppose porn could be immoral, but I just think some some kinds of porn is not immoral. What about naked statues of women? Non nude porn? It matters what kind of porn it is. Good luck.

I also say things like online marketing, seo and try to make it boring tech computer nerd stuff, but one advice is if you want to have control about who will know and who won't
use whois domain privacy as otherwise when googling your name it might show up which domains you own

Imagine living in the so called "Bible Belt", Being born and raised Church of Christ, had it rammed down my throat all my life until I got old enough to get my own place and now I'm in my 40's and my Mom still beats me over the head with a bible! So I would not tell her in a million years! Yikes!!!
My dad is actually a pretty cool guy, I've even seen the history on his computer and found that he surfs porn, but I would still not tell him either. My sister is signed on under my Broker, (cool sister), My wife knows, don't like it because she's afraid I will meet and fuck a porn star, but she loves the money, so she "Tolerates" me doing it.
Some, actually most of my friends are cool with it, but they always want me to get them freebies or a free Fleshlight, Not happening! A couple of my friends even signed on under my broker acct, but they fell flat on their face when they saw how much time and effort it takes to survive in this business.
I'm a flea on an Elephant's ass in this industry, but I'm doing fair and growing.

Best advice I can give is to be selective of who you tell. The people who knows I am making more than average money and have left my day job, I just tell them I am doing one of those Google ads schemes. I just direct them to some of my sites or other sites I am associated with that are not in this industry

I didn't have to tell my family because there are people in my family that have noticed me on the internet. After that happens, the word spreads around to everyone else in the family and before you know it, the entire family is aware of it. However, working in porn is not something that I am ashamed of so I really don't care that they know.

The funny thing about it though is that once someone from your family asks you about it, (that is, if they notice you on the internet) - they are admitting to you that they look at porn...and if they enjoy looking at porn sites, how can they get upset with you for working in an industry that feeds their desires?

That is, unless they are hypocritical.

That's just my personal situation though. As far as your situation, if you are not actually featured in the porn that you are working with, you could always deny it and say that those files conisted of a zip download that you downloaded from Limewire and that you never got around to deleting them....or something along those lines. Although, it sounds like you already admitted everything to your cousins and 3 other people.

My parents know I run a site and model on several sites. They are supportive, and even have helped me with a lot of it. I don't do any hardcore stuff though so I imagine it's easier to accept. My boyfriend and friends all know about it, but I try to surround myself with only cool people

I believe in honesty. I told my family within one year of opening my website. I did not want my Mom (or anyone else) to find out by someone coming to them and saying... "Hey I saw your daughter..."

They may not be overly joyed at the fact about what I do, but I know they are proud. I have never asked for help from my family since I left home at 19. And in the past 10 years I have actually helped them financially.

I am over 18 and I now live my life for me. If I am happy doing what I am doing, then no one has any say on what they think about me. I don't listen... or let them make me feel bad. I'm not ashamed of anything I am doing.

Good luck... hope you're able to come to terms with things. If you're that worried, I would say you may be in the wrong job market... because you can't hide from it forever, eventually someone will find out...

Tell them something that sounds cool. They wont ask any further questions if they hear that you are an "offshore programmer" or something
