Fonts with spikes?

Ok, I have a weird problem, and I'm hoping someone here either knows how to fix it, or at least knows what's causing it. I'm working on a logo for my wife's family business, and the font that I want to use for it has suddenly grown "spikes". I went through my entire font list (around 2000 of them) and found that I have several, some that I use all the time, that have all grown spikes when I try to use them in any graphics program. One I just used less than a week ago, and it was fine. Today, it has spikes sticking out in all directions. Does anyone know what causes this? Thanks!

Your fonts have gone Punk.
Heaven help you.

Seriously, I have no idea how that could happen. Maybe they're fine, but just not displaying properly.

Try the fonts on a different computer? (or a VM session?)
