Over the last year, I cut down from:

10 to 20 per day to...
5 to 10 per day to...
1 to 5 per day to...
1 to 4 per day to...
1 to 3 per day....
And the occasional 1 or 2 cigs per day, but it was VERY difficult to break 1 to 3.

Anyhow, I started with forcing myself to NOT have the habitual smokes...
1. When I wake up.
2. After food.
3. When first getting into a car.
4. After sex.
5. With coffee.
6. With alcohol.
7. When taking breaks.

And so on. When those times would come around, I would simple not smoke, and would wait until after the craving passed to have a cig.

That has helped with quitting a lot more than I probably realize. I think if I were still a pack-a-day, I don't know that I would be able to do it.

So, just an FYI for anyone else looking to quit... The hard part is breaking the habit, if you do that before you try quitting, your chances increase significantly of quitting for good.

Kuddos for all of you trying to quit
I need to do the same

BareBacked 01-08-2011 11:46 AM

have you started exercising?
Doing cardio daily really helped me see my health coming back and kept me off the cigs.
The improvments are amazingly fast

I tried the gum and patches, but after a couple days, I quit those also and decided to Raw-Dog it... commando style.

So far, on Day 8 now, it seems to be getting easier, except for if I get into confrontation as Antonio mentioned, those times... I found that if you just go bang it out w/ your GF (or whoever), all is well.

Thanks for all the support! :) I'm glad to see that others are quitting also.

smoke free 8 or 9 years now. and yeah, quitting aids are for loser - it's all about will power :winkwink:

The coughing is from the steam breaking up the gunk in your lungs... I switched to vaporizing and that is what "cleaned" my lungs. It was absolutely terrible. If you keep doing it, you'll have teary eyes, gagging, and they you'll start seeing chunks of black shit in what you cough up. Horrible shit. But cleansing.

I don't know anything about those e-cigs but it sounds like they are along the same thing. You will get the nicotine but the steam/vapor will actually help you. It's a real bitch though, you'll cough like you've never coughed before.

I can only assume that it would help clean your lungs faster. I was never a cig smoker like I said but holy shit I was a heavy bong smoker and 2-3 months of vaporizing I never felt soooo good in my life!

good luck! congrats on choosing to be healthy!

No cravings here. The trick wasn't to quit smoking, but to quit nicotine. No gum, patches or ecigs. Just cold-turkey worked best. The first 8 days were horrible, but it slowly started getting better after that. Around 3 or 4 months in, it got pretty easy.

Nookster 12-27-2012 02:09 AM

The cough will persist for at least 2 months (depending on how long you smoked for)...with some very nasty stuff coming out during that time. If it continues after that, see a doctor. Good for you! Welcome to the club of ex-smokers! :thumbsup

Just noticed you updated...

Congrats!!!

GFED 12-27-2012 10:04 AM

It's just your lungs trying to clean themselves out. If you've been smoking for a while all your cilia is probably dead. Give it a few weeks and you should be feeling better.

exactly - ecigs, patches etc. just make it more difficult cause nicotine is what you are actually addicted to - good job! :thumbsup

woj 12-27-2012 12:44 PM

good job :thumbsup

Sin_Vraal 12-27-2012 03:50 PM

whoever said lay off the booze or you'll be smoking again is right.

I'm in Seattle for the holidays and its fucking cold... want to stop smoking? go to a place where you cant smoke inside, and its rainy and cold outside... I dont even have the urge to smoke.

My advice is : avoid places that let you smoke and drink at the same time, or you will be smoking again.

If you're 3-4 weeks in and you get drunk, yeah, probably.

At first I would recommend not drinking at all, (easier to fight the urge once you given it up for a while).

NiXXiN 01-07-2013 05:34 PM

im not sure why you posted a picture of a man blowing an invisible guy but congrats on the quit smoking thing u got going on.
