Even though Naples is over 200 miles from the cape on a clear day you can still see the shuttle launch. Being up high on the condo also helped.

So a friend and I were waiting for the hoist and we could clearly see the contrail had split in two and I said " That can't be good ". Made it to my car and put on the radio and heard the news.It was the first time in my life that I felt the USA wasn't perfect.

That's crazy.

I was in high school. For the most part we had no classes that afternoon, and we all gathered in groups around TV sets in various classrooms and watched the news. It was stunning.

I was in third grade and I had been feeling ill. So, I was in the nurse's office and she has news radio on. They came on to say it happened and so I heard it before most of our school because they didn't have us watch it. I went back to my class and said what happened and the teacher called me an outright liar. Which, sticks with me because I knew I wasn't lying and was a goodie two shoes kid. So, there was no reason to think I would be lying. Then, the next day the jerk had to apologize to me in front of the class.

That was the day I decided I wanted to go to journalism school because I got a weird buzz out of breaking the story.

My mom was a science teacher and had applied to be on the shuttle. So, I was also glad she hadn't made it.
