Once you learn how to pick keywords there just isn't enough competition to worry about in any given niche. There are millions of niches in mainstream and less than a hundred of those are too saturated to pursue.

I disagree. Between my friends' network of sites, we've got over 1,000 that aren't worth pursuing because unless you can perform miracles, you aren't going to start a site today and outrank us any time soon. So be happy with at the max, getting 20% of the traffic that we get for those keywords.
The truth is, a lot of mainstream is over-saturated. On the other hand, there are still a lot of diamonds in the rough and there are ALWAYS new products coming. Just keep on your toes and make your bets wisely. In mainstream people start cornering the big products before they even come out.
The best thing about mainstream is you can make something "viral." End of story. And if lauralace figured the exact since on how to do this, she'd be talking to Coke, McDonalds, etc. not GFY.
