Spartacus is a great series too. I found the overall plot a bit thin at times, and all the swearing with "fuck this" and "fuck" that going on a bit gratuitous. (wasn't the word fuck first used something like a thousand or 1200 years AFTER the time of Spartacus/Ceasar etc?). But all in all it's great and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of it.

Game of Thrones, at least so far, seems to be in a class all it's own though. If they keep going the way they are with it, it will be forever compared and likened to the calibre of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wouldn't blame anyone a bit for doing so either. As much as I liked LOTR I have to say I am immensely enjoying GOT nearly as much so far.

Spartacus and Game of Thrones are both great in their own ways -- but they're really two different tier shows.

Question to anyone that's red the books - Is season 1 close enough to the books so I can start reading book 2 without having to read 1? I am reading it now and I'm almost where the second episode stopped and it's almost identical from dialogue to characters, etc. They did an excellent job casting this series. I am so hooked.............

I haven't read the books yet. I am waiting until he finishes the full series before starting it. However, I have a friend that has read them. He said the TV series followed the storyline of the books faithfully, but that you miss a ton of detail and back story. So I think you could start reading book two and not be too lost, but you would likely be missing a bunch of the story as well.

You should read the book to get the deeper plot lines and details etc.

I'm about 3/4 through the first book. It seems close enough, I don't think you'll miss much. There seems to be a great deal more description in be book, especially with regard to the Dothraki and the Vale and the back story.

Yeah I was afraid of that, I just can't wait to see what happens in book 2 since the series set the ground work for a shit storm coming. But you are right, unless the series had a narrator they couldn't really give you 100%.

I'm eager to get to the second book too, but having watched the show then read the book. It's bringing so much more to light and making it that much more enjoyable, even though I know what's going to happen.

CDSmith 08-05-2011 03:24 PM

I just got the first 4 books delivered to me a few weeks ago. Haven't started reading them yet but I'm soon going to read book 1.... and that's it. I don't think I'll read book 2 until after next spring when season 2 of the series is out on HBO and I've watched it.

Looking forward to getting into that first book though.

Game of Thrones is the best series since Deadwood. Sparticus is a good series but not in the same class.

About a quarter of the way through book 2 now and all I can say is WOW.

If season 2 of the series is anything close to this book it's going to blow all of our minds completely.

Lucky you.

Lucky her too I suppose, since her character seems to be in a write-in part of the story that wasn't even in the book. I guess HBO figured to add extra sexytime to the series.

Of that I have no doubt.

Btw, did you know that the chick who plays Shae the whore comes from a porn background? She's done about half a dozen German pornos in past years, most around 2002. Just a fun fact. :D

Osha is my fav girl in the show, Osha the wildling woman now a slave at Winterfell. Methinks she be hot.

VenzuelanChick 11-30-2011 02:33 AM

I cant wait for season 2 to be out. Such a good series!!!!!

I'm halfway through the book (called Clash of Kings), and I'm telling you I can't put it down it's that riveting. RIVETING!

April 15th can't come soon enough.

moeloubani 11-30-2011 04:22 PM

finished the last book in the series a few months ago and it kills me knowing that ill have to wait years to find out what happens next

the time between the last two books was 6 years and if that holds up then it won't be for another decade that i find out what happens :(

Supposedly when he wrote the last book it ended up being like 2400 pages so he split it in two which means, in theory, the next book already has a rough draft done. I have a feeling HBO is on him now as well to get to work on these because they have said they would like to make the whole series if they can.

I've resisted starting the series until he has it finished because I don't want to get knee deep into it and have it never end.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Too much teasing about dragons and undead... Needs to kick it up a notch.

The last two books were the ones that were split and ran cuncurrently(A Feast for Crows and a Dance with Dragons) . The next one was 100 pages in when he released a Dance with Dragons so it may be a while before release. HBO has enough material to last 8+ seasons at least already.

Very good books

Ah, I see. I guess when I read the interview with him I got my books mixed up. . . of course having not read them I have no idea what order they go either :)

Hopefully he will knock this one out in a decent amount of time.

Do you know if he is planning one more or two more to wrap the series up?

digitalfantasies 12-01-2011 02:13 PM

I am going to watch the first episodes tonight

He could conclude certain parts of the story and introduce a bunch of completely brand new plot lines and keep on going for another ten books after these ones and I'd be just fine with that. For this genre the guy is an insanely talented writer.

HBO can wrap up the series after 7 or 8 seasons all they want, but keep the books coming.

TheStout 12-02-2011 09:33 AM

He has said that he will not be introducing any new point of view characters after the last two (Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons). I have no idea how many more books he is planning though.

Welcome to the dark side.

CDSmith 01-17-2012 11:56 AM

I'm down to the final 50 pages of book 5 now. Dreading finishing it because I know I'm then at the edge of a cliff waiting for the next book which may not come for a long time. Years, I'm told.

Good news is season 2 is only 3 months away. HBO is running S1 episodes one a week starting this week, for anyone that missed it and wants to catch up.

CDSmith 03-15-2012 06:42 AM

Only 30 days til S2.

I know you're all as stoked as I am.

Yes.

Far-L 05-14-2012 09:59 AM

I enjoy the show but Season two, no spoilers don't worry, does diverge from some plot points of the books unneccessarily in a few places and imo for no good reason at all. (Well adding some gratuitous sex is not necessarily a bad thing... but... they did much better with the ratio of show/book in season one than in s2 imo.

moeloubani 05-14-2012 10:57 AM

yeah i noticed some timelines were really clipped in season 2 but to be honest the stuff the cut out was a little boring in the book anyways

damn though, at first i thought season 2 was going to bore me after i read the books but damn, these guys can really make a show well

I wouldn't mind the clipping out for expediency as that worked in S1 but now actual plot points are being added/changed and I don't see the point at all since the books are so tight and well plotted.
