He did not make it. He died on the way to the vet only 1/2 mile after we left my place.
He jumped around a couple times then suddenly stopped breathing with his eyes open. When I got to the vet they checked and he was gone. He had about an 1/8 inch hole on the side of his neck. Almost surely a bite wound. It was prob due to an animal attack. Poss a racoon. But I will never know. The bite may have penetrated the windpipe. The girls at the vet thought he may have had a precondition where his immune system was bad and that is why the pus built up so fast. Then again it may have just been too severe a bite. I then continued on to my friends and we buried him in the woods near his house near a big tree. My friend did all the digging work. We wrapped in in a blanket and did a little ceremony. I have had cats since I was 19. I am 54 now. 35 years. So it is kind of tough. I don't think I will be getting another right away. I want to thank every poster personally who wished me the best. It was a long tough night but your tips and help really helped and I want to sincerly thank each of you for your kindness when I needed it. Your my family and I love you all. |
sorry to hear
you did your best for him which I am sure he is grateful |
So sorry to hear about that. My condolences. Never wait for your pets health unless you absolutely have to, I've learned that lesson.
|
wow that sucks was just coming here to see what happened. sorry to hear.
|
As a fellow cat lover I suggest you keep your future cats indoors. Not only can they get injured out there (and they will), but they also kill off a lot of native animals and breed like hell.
|
from reading the thread this morning I never thought it would end like this... :(
|
Cats are very resilient and do pretty good with healing. My cats have all passed away now, but always in my heart. Muffin was 16 and had cancer, Snookums was 20 and had liver failure.

I prob won't get any more cats. I just don't have the heart to keep them inside altho if I got a kitten maybe I could start from square one. You are right. Outdoors is a dangerous place. Had I asked him though, he would have wanted to live his life as he did I feel. That is how he started life and that is what he enjoyed doing. 2 days ago he was feisty as could be and alive as ever. Ya just never know I guess. Ill be ok. Just needed someone to talk to. Thank you all again. |
Fuck, sorry to hear he didn't make it :(
Hang in there |

My cats: Sam (siamese) 1976 to 1994 (17) Rascal (siamese) 1979 to 1996 (16) Squirley (long haired female) 1994 to 1996 Adopted stray (I believ feral) who had FLV but went from the lowest cat on the outdoor heirarchy to coming inside and living all through 1995, I fed her outside. she sat on my door step from March 1994 till October 1994. One night when it got cold she came in. I fell in love with her. My only female. Named my biz after her.. SQ Virtual (unknown age) The Three Legged Boy (showed up in 2002, fought with both Pippy and Lucky) Missing one rear leg. Tough as hell. Totally feral. Lived under the home for three years through the winter. 2002 till 2005. (unknown age) American Breed Feral Stray (also lived under the home from 2002, lived a year longer than The Three Legged Boy 2002 till 2006. (unknown age) I used to bring out two huge plates full of catfood each night in sub freezing weather down to 20 below, much to the shagrin of the neighbors. In the end I had to sneak out in the middle of the night to feed them. Then go back out and get the plates and the frozen solid (in 15 mins) water. In 2004 my neighbor sucker punched me cause Lucky was in his yard. His two dogs surprised Lucky and cornered him who then nipped at one dog and run. I soon got a knock on the door. Turns out he was a state championship wrestler. Only 145 LBs. I had been up all night (as usual) and it was 9:00 am so I was tired. He was ranting about how he was gonna kill my cat if it came in his yard. I stepped out and he lured me to the street to fight. He immediately took me down. As a 47 y/o man I said Uncle immediately. He cococked me in the temple super hard. My glasses flew 30 feet across the pavement. I had brain swelling the next couple days. One minute I am on the computer like now, the next I am in the middle of the street on my back. Within 3 minutes. He then reported me and I was threatened with eviction 3 times over the next few years. I had a lot of hate for him. He had a little girl 2 years ago and finally put all his energy into her and away from hating me. Pippy (17 LB grey tabby short and very stocky, cute cat, age 5 when adopted from the humane society) 1994 to 2002 (13) Lucky (american breed, common brown/tan striped with tiger stripes across the eyes) 2000 to 2011 (born in 1999, adopted) (12 1/2) It helps to remember. |
Wow VJo I am REALLY sorry to hear that man. I went out for breakfast hoping to return to some good news but sadly that was not the case.
I understand what you're going through because of this: When I was 9 my dog and center of my life, peanut, got hit by a car and died. I had him since I was four and named him Peanut because my favorite books then were Snoopy books. LOL Plus, I loved peanut butter.... Anyway, he was a Beagle mix and always getting out of the fenced-in backyard (somehow). He would dig under, jump over, anything to run free. Well, he got out around 9 o'clock, my mom let him out in the back yard. Ten minutes later he was gone. We looked everywhere but then a neighbor called and said a dog had been hit up the street, maybe it was peaut. My dad and I race there, he's lying the street. I stay with him while Dad gets the car 9and mom). We race to the vet. It's now maybe 11:30 at night. My Dad driving, Mom in the front seat, me in the back seat, holding Peanut in my lap, wrapped in a blanket. The vet was twenty minutes away. "Hurry Dad! Hurry!" Peanut, breathing heavily, started breathing more shallow, and just before he died he lifted his head and looked right in my eyes, as if to say 'Sorry', 'Good-bye' and 'I Love You' all at the same time. He died in my arms. Four four months I was a wreck. Finally, just to help me heal (I was doing crazy shit like pretending Peanut wasn't actually dead, just hiding under the couch, so i would come home from school and go 'Peanut! ome out from under the couch!' I was a fucking mess, at nine years old. (Explains a lot, eh?) So they got me another dog four months later, let me pick her out, a little blond butterball named Buttercup. LOL She lived 19 years. I still have her ashes. Greatest (doggy) love of my life. So i understand, from a dog not cat perspective, your pain my friend. Obviously I can still remember every detail of Peanut's death 35 years later so this shit never really leaves you. But new love, new joys, new friendships are there for you, when you're ready VJo, in the form of a new kitty "life partner" best friend/companion. When you're ready. Big hug to VJo on a day like this. :) |
Damn, sorry to hear just read it all and was hoping for the best. :(
|
oh damn :(
so sorry to hear this. grieve and then get another one. always a kitten or cat who needs a home and you need one too i think :) |
Oh my goodness. SO SO SORRY. losing a pet can just tear you up. I have had almost every kind of animal as pets through my life. My brother calls them, "little tragedies in the making". Almost lost our cat to an unexplained reaction to vaccines last week, and he still isn't 100%, or even close to it.
Really tough news. :( |
Very sorry for your loss, it sucks to lose a pet.
I have a parrot, mostly because of their long lifespan. He should easily outlive me. I'd be very hurt if anything happened to him. |
So sorry to hear about kitty :(I worry about mine when she wants out at 6:00 in the morning.and the damn coons and skunks are still out in the bushes.
It's funny as hell when the coons come up to the window and intimidate her,she growls like hell and head butts the window trying to get at them although they would rip her apart |
SUPER SORRY TO HEAR THIS, My God. Hang in there. Sending good energy to you as I write this.

((((Vjo))))
(thats a hug :upsidedow) |

Wow 19 years is REALLY good. Buttercup! :thumbsup You are right. They say you should always go get another animal before too long to help heal. I might. We'll see. I really did not expect him to die. But he was very serious I knew. But to suddenly die in front of me (like you) I never witnessed that before. But in a way I am glad that I did rather than getting to the vet and them telling me he had to be euthanized and then you have the unknown. Anyhow, I could have kept this to myself or post about it. I decided to post about all this. I am glad I did. It helped a lot and again I thank you all. I will always remember every person in this thread who was kind to me and Lucky. I'm getting kind of tired but I want to go thru and respond to each poster that I havent responded to but that will get long so also thank you very much to all these good folks for your kind words: Babaganoosh CyberHustler Intrinsic KBHMN L-Pink Mutt PR Glen SIK Spunky _Richard_ babymaker gabe100 gleem idtapdat jollyperv pantyfreek porno jew sperbonzo suesheboy I did not mean to miss anyone. When he came in the first time through the cat door the entire house IMMEDIATELY smelled like skunk. It was so nausiating. All that works is white vinegar. Forget tomato juice. I then had to throw everything in the bathroom away after washing him with pure white vinegar, plus cover all furn as I had a little skunk running around for about 2 weeks where if he sat on something it smelled like skunk. Plus he was freaking out and headed back outside for a few hours till I caught him. Major agita :) Sleeping, forget about it. Takes about 8 months to lose all skunk smell. Then it happened twice more. :) The first time I seen the skunk. Lucky did too about 4am in late Sept. The skunk wandered off, Lucky behind it, I lost site plus didnt want to get too close. Of course he came back blasted. The second time he got, it right outside the door. Skunk BOMB for the neighborhood. :) I hope they didnt know it was Lucky. You can imagine. You can smell a skunk a half mile away. Third time he only got grazed. Guess he was getting more wise. Still real bad tho. |

They tend to not run quite so much either if I remember right. |
I like animals a lot more than I like people.
Sorry to hear about your kitty. Keep your head up. Meow. :) |

It is worth it of course. |

Get some rest buddy, you must be exhausted, emotionally and physically. We'll be here for ya when you're rested.
GREAT Marshall Tucker Band choice. Another would be: "You Don't Live Forever". Tears can be a good thing, remember. (Will go on and on about my love for MTB at another time.) |

Sorry to hear about your cat. You are from MN right? In August I lost 2 outdoor cats to coyotes. Are they in your area? The fuckers are really starting to come through now that fall is approaching. I even set up a bunch of deer meat in my backyard with a crossbow one night in hopes of killing them.
|
I am sooo very sorry to hear about Lucky's fate! :( I am sure you made him happy and comfortable the last moments of his life, heck for his whole like, and for that he is grateful. :)
|
Thanks MP, I will. About to wrap it up. The music as always helps. Thanks buddy.
Mutt, thanks. Lets go back to 2000 and listen to rogue Stern again. Ahh but alas we can only go forward. Cyberhustler, I take what you say seriously. I dont think I can own another cat and let it run so we'll see. Maybe I'll get a dog. L-Pink, Thanks buddy. And EVERYONE else thanks. OK gonna call my brother in Tampa. Guess I will wrap it up. It takes some time. I came home and poured out his water dish. I guess that is the first step. It will take time but this thread helped get me off on the right foot. I am ok and could go longer but I think we all did a good thing today and you all can be proud of yourselves and of each other. The response was overwhelming. In the future I will be there for all of you. Thank you all again very much. I love you all. |
Wow... expected some better news from last night early morning read.
Harsh news. I hate it when my animals pass. Wish you brief mourning and I implore you to go have a beer :thumbsup |

Fuck, man, I'm sorry to hear that.
But man, you did what you could, you were there for him. As cat deaths go, it's not the worst kind, he went as a warrior, a real cat, and cats like that kind of thing. |
Thanks Deej, Good idea, I am about to crack one right now.
Ah ya know we do our best that is all we can do. As Tjeezers said, it is sort of our place to realize that someday we must put them to rest and then carry on. There is a day for mourning but we must carry on. We never forget. But we must also carry on. So many cats/dogs never get a home so let's remember our pets were the "Lucky" ones. :) It is tough but it is life. It was this way before us. It will be this way long after us. It is just nature and to everything there is a season. It is something that is out of our hands. Let's celebrate that one lil cat in 50,000,000 strays had a good life, ate nothing but Fanci Feast. :) Let's remember, let's never forget but let's also carry on. |

So sorry for your loss. I'm a cat owner myself - all were stray kittens that needed homes. It seems like a cruel trick that we get so attached when we are destined to part company so soon.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss. |
[to myself]
It's never easy tho. I am not looking for sympathy as my mom was 95, had a good life, but I lost her also earlier this year and I learned.. the best way to slowly get over things like this, there is only one way. You have to keep your mind occupied. Read threads. Make threads. Watch stuff on TV. Talk about it as I am to friends. Go places where others maybe can relate (such as this thread for someone someday) but mainly GET your mind off of it. But no matter how well I can explain things and as a formally educated engineer, I can think very logicly. But it's a thing of the heart, not the mind. It takes time. And there is some real pain. When I lost mom, the hospice people for the county started contacting me and you just talk and they are very good. Today I got a survey for them in the mail 6 months later. I was gonna throw it but I might just give it flying good marks. They did real good for me. I cried there as I cried here. So it takes time. The hardest thing is to be alone for some reason altho I have been alone all my life. I am a loner's loner :) (up until last few years) And my cat was really never around. And when he did come in he was very often a pain. But still he was there. I was not completely alone. That is the thing. I am now completely alone around the house. Maybe.. I leaned on him as much as he leaned on me. Maybe I have been leaning on cats since I bought My first lil siamese Sam at age 19 in 1976. I put age 17 down but Sam made it to 18. 76-94 Sam was the man. Or cat. :) Coolest cat ever. I think I will have to go get a new boy. :) It is the only way the heart can go on. Maybe go to the humane society. Maybe a kitten. We'll see. I prob have to get another boy. You seen all my boys. :) I guess there is no reason to stop now. :) |
Quote:
Stray kittens - that is a very nice way to do things. Maybe I'll just get a kitten that needs a home. My first two cats were siamese kittens, all the rest were strays or from the humane society. But a kitten really is the way and I think I will return to a kitten. Then he can grow up here rather than somewhere else. That is a big factor. Thanks and best wishes to you and all your little gibbys. :) |

don't be afraid. let emotions crush you. you will be free and liberated as a result. |
When you started saying you weren't gonna get another cat, I had a feeling you'd get a new cat,
go get a new cat cat. |
I'm very sorry for your loss :(
|
oh Vjo sorry to hear, looks like you knows and love cats, so time to get a new kitty to fill the hole ... hope all is well as well it can be ... :winkwink:

Vho: Let me know when you're ready for my cute kitty gif collection, I'll post them all here for you, to make you smile and remember why you need to find a new friend when you're ready. Even Teencat will appreciate them (maybe, he ignores me lately. I believe this is due to my creepy admiration for him...) Music is always a healer - maybe something LOUD and CRANKING to get your extreme feelings out....:) |
Man that's rough.
Don't give up on having pets. Buried 3 cats already but wouldn't give up loving more, have 2 right now |
sad thread, sounds like your cat was loved at least and that is more than most people and animals ever had
