condolences... I lost a 10 year old cat over 5 years ago and still miss her... at least he had a long life. Most cats don't live a year. Time makes it a little better.

Sorry to hear that, buddy.

At least you can take some solace in the fact that the cat lived a long and fruitful life. I'm not much of a cat person but what i've noticed about cats is that they live violent lives and often die bloody deaths. I used to see these stray cats in a field near me stalk birds and tear them to shreds. Violent lives, violent deaths. Either a dog gets them and rips them open instead of just chasing them like the bumbling, easily fooled dogs in the TV cartoons, or another tom gets them, or a poisoned bait, or a passing car. Cats are the gangsters of the animal world, living outside the law and often dying there. There are a great many of them that never grow old by the fire.

I know how you feel though. I had a bluetick coonhound a couple years back that I was training and she ran a deer out on the road and got hit by a car right in front of me. Only eight months old. Without going into gory details I will say that it was quite possibly one of the worst days of my life, but time heals all wounds. Best thing to do is to get another one as soon as you feel ready, like some other people mentioned.

Thank you so much. Very good points. Thanks to the other new posters as well. Good points.

Thanks to everyone for your support and good wishes. It really helped. I feel better today. Sleeping helped me see what really happened and get a grip on things.

In a nutshell this is what happened:

He got into a cat fight in the early am.

At noon I seen him in the chair outside. The blood stains on the chair indicate he was bit at this point but prob the infection had not taken hold yet.

By 6:00 pm he came in and I noticed a problem. The infection was really taken hold as the pus was very pronounced and his breathing was labored. At this time the writing was on the wall.

The reason his breathing was bad was the pus was in his nose and system and growing fast.

By 4am he was staggering.A very bad sign. At 7:30 he passed.

He prob did have a weakened immune system (as the nurse thought). Poss due to bites in previous years. He prob had FLV. At this point his immune system was weak. He prob was heading for problems soon regardless of getting bit. Getting bit just put him over the edge sooner.

So this is what happened.

In the end, he lived his life how he wanted. Perhaps if he was kept inside all his life he would have made it 2-3 more years. But he would not have been happy.

I will prob get another guy before too long. I dont know if I can handle a kitten at my age anymore so maybe I'll adopt an older cat again. We'll see.

The kindness I felt from the people on this board was overwhelming. Some of the truly nicest people are in this biz. A lot of you have hearts of gold.

I consider every poster in this thread to be a friend and maybe I can be there for some of you someday.

Thank you all again so very much.
