not really advertising if you're only promoting shit you actually use and are happy with. I do this on a few sites and make referrals and with their page views a few footer text links wouldn't kill anyone and would probably do quite well. Waiting on my 10% consulting fee.

no but that was! http://affiliate.godaddy.com/redirect/49A1A2758..

I think you're the first person to think of this. I bet they'd make 50 million per year with GoDaddy referrals!

redwhiteandblue 11-20-2011 05:20 AM

I'll give them money in return for a link...

I know I make a bit from my sites and with their page views not sure about 50 million but I think it would be substantial. :2 cents:

All the time. I go in and add "and she was a proud lesbian" on a famous straight actress's wiki page and it stays there for a long time.

I built a site for a local community service, the previous site, linked to by wikipedia is no longer online, so I edited the link to the new one.

Deleted, and old one put back up as the link by the editor.

Go back, add the live site, with a note that the old link goes 404

New link deleted, old link still up, IP banned.

Fuckwads.

Anyway, they should stop being so pretentious, put up ads instead of asking for donations, and at least give:

users something they might be interested in to click on
advertisers a chance to give wikipedia users something they may find useful

End result is the same as asking for donations, but with millions of people gaining an extra benefit(s).

cam_girls 11-20-2011 09:08 AM

Can a (not tiny) site pay it's hosting bill with a link to the webhost in the footer, in general? It's not a video site.

It's a publicity stunt to put a face to Wiki. Who on Earth needs that many mug shots plastered all over the freakin internet?

jimmycooper 11-20-2011 09:39 AM

After reading this thread, I've decided that I will not be accepting donations.

It takes a special kind of sheep to donate money to help the wolves. Gotta love the constant groveling by Mr Wales as he knows well the psychological profiles of his targets. :)

the world is a better place with wikipedia then without. only immature faggots hate it because it's not perfect or see conspiracy under every bed.

From Wikipedia programmer Brandon Harris
I feel like I?m living the first line of my obituary.

I don?t think there will be anything else that I do in my life as important as what I do now for Wikipedia. We?re not just building an encyclopedia, we?re working to make people free. When we have access to free knowledge, we are better people. We understand the world is bigger than us, and we become infected with tolerance and understanding.

Wikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world. I work at the small non-profit that keeps it on the web. We don?t run ads because doing so would sacrifice our independence. The site is not and should never be a propaganda tool.

Our work is possible because of donations from our readers. Will you help protect Wikipedia by donating $5, ?10, ¥1000 or whatever you can afford?

I work at the Wikimedia Foundation because everything in my soul tells me it?s the right thing to do. I?ve worked at huge tech companies, doing some job to build some crappy thing that?s designed to steal money from some kid who doesn?t know it. I would come home from work crushed.

You might not know this, but the Wikimedia Foundation operates with a very small staff. Most other top-ten sites have tens of thousands of people and massive budgets. But they produce a fraction of what we pull off with sticks and wire.

When you give to Wikipedia, you?re supporting free knowledge around the world. You?re not only leaving a legacy for your children and for their children, you?re elevating people around the world who have access to this treasure. You?re assuring that one day everyone else will too.

Thank you,

Brandon Harris
Programmer, Wikimedia Foundation

Certainly, for anything about currently living people and present day brands, I think the site is an abomination. If people want to pay for quality research, there are better options. For a free one, it sometimes seems more worthwhile than, ya know, nothing.

Van you give some examples of inaccuracy?

cam_girls 11-24-2011 11:45 AM

It says PROLOG is a 5GL when it's a 4GL

Quote:

Prolog, OPS5, and Mercury are examples of fifth-generation languages.[citation needed]

i.e. a PROLOG Interpreter is generally written in a 3GL like C, so it's 3+1 GL. (Generation Language)

1GL MACHINE CODE ....F8 01
2GL ASSEMBLY CODE ..LDA 01
3GL DECLARATIVE ... WHILE (x<10) *state how to do
4GL RELATIONAL .... SELECT moon FROM planets *state what to do

each Generation the compiler or interpreter is written in a computer language of the preceding generation.

e.g. you need C (3GL) to write a PROLOG interpreter (4GL)

this is not even mentioned in Wiki they claim language levels are based on code size and levels of abstraction.

Manwin should buy it and make it into a tube !

porno jew 11-24-2011 12:33 PM

they've run studies where wikipedia is as accurate as, or better than resources like encyclopedias. anyone saying wikipedia is a poor source is generally ignorant. and guess what, if you see an error you can edit it.

Hentaikid 11-24-2011 02:08 PM

I lost the link but the donation statistics are online, and they're doing pretty well this year.

Sanger and Wales were identified as co-founders [of Wikipedia] at least as early as September 2001 by The New York Times. [....] In August [2002], Wales identified himself as "co-founder" of Wikipedia.

In late 2005, Wales edited his own biographical entry on the English Wikipedia [and] removed references to Sanger as the co-founder of Wikipedia. Sanger commented that "having seen edits like this, it does seem that Jimmy is attempting to rewrite history."

I don't see the point of refusing ads, especially if their layout is not too annoying...And you can't compare wikipedia to a park unless we have an internet government that can taxes globally web users adn then fund wikipedia, there's no other way than going capitalist here.

wehateporn 11-24-2011 04:12 PM

IMHO there are many far more worthy causes than Wikipedia :2 cents:

Jimmy should have kept his adult site running to fund Wikipedia
