People love to draw outrageous conclusions to support their preconceived notions about life. The conclusion that society doesn't want to draw is that the person with more money works harder, is more dedicated, and smarter. It's easier to feel better about yourself by assuming the poor person is more deserving than anyone else.

I strongly disagree. I think if it was a mom driving a minivan filled with kids, the rhetoric would be just as unpleasant. Along the lines of "Irresponsible mother endangers children by trying to take shortcut and wrecks van into wet cement."
I definitely dont think people would be sympathetic just because she's driving a less expensive vehicle with kids, if anything people would be more angry.
I don't care if the guy was driving a Miata, minivan or what. It's still a retarded move he made.
