This is so true and accurate.

Shooting porn with DSLR's are not as easy as most think. but many are wannabes who jump on band wagons

Robbie 05-19-2012 09:26 PM

LOL! Good one.

I especially liked how he would walk up to the camera and back (causing him to go in and out of focus) lol

Shooting porn hand held and moving all around would definitely be a challenge...and you'd end up with videos that look like Naughty America's "Tonight's Girlfriend" site with the focus in and out constantly.

But I'm going to do this on full auto with a tripod this week. It's going to be the easiest shoot I've ever done. First time with this camera on full auto with no pro lighting.

I won't have to hold my "normal" video rig (which weighs a ton) and juggle the battery belt and set up lighting and wireless sound, etc.

But I'll do that this week. After seeing what this camera does...it's gonna be the easiest shoot I've ever done. :)

I guess you guys can make that call when I do it in a couple of days. I'm pretty hyped up about it.

you should go to vegas and shoot at night. All the lights, it would look amazing.

I'd have to see what happens with it. The Vegas strip lights might turn out to look amazing...or they might completely make the camera sensors go nuts. lol

Lets get real kinky, shall we..?

Yeah, the C500 is a $30,000 piece of gear. Not really needed to shoot porn scenes.

And I think the 5D is actually better (even though it's cheaper) than the 1D: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EO...EOS_5D_Mark_II

Dude that is an old Canon 1Ds that did not do video in that vs page.

We are now in the Canon 1Dx vs 5D MkIII times ;)

I just googled that one up real quick and didn't really look that closely at it.

But I did compare the two cameras before I purchased them.

The 1D MkIV is the one I compared against and decided that I like the 5d Mk III better.

I think you might be thinking of the 1dC: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...4K_Cinema.html

That's a $15,000 camera that is awesome...but not really needed to shoot porn scenes.

I don't mind spending money on top quality gear...but I'm not so sure you would be able to tell the over $11,000 difference in price with the finished, edited, and compressed for the internet product between the 1dC and 5dMkiii

Radical Bucks 05-19-2012 10:47 PM

I was just mentioning these pieces of gear just to be kinky about it all. LOL

I'm more like Ed Wood. :1orglaugh

Quoted because it the exact opposite to how films are made.

I think I got a handle on how to shoot. But thank you for your "expert" advice. :)

Anyway, I'm gonna shoot a "real" scene with it at the beginning of the week. I'll have it edited down and on the site within 24 hours of shooting it and I'll post up a link to the trailer for all the folks that want to see it.

A few things:

It will shoot a 30 minute scene when in movie mode.

If you want to take a photo while shooting in movie mode you simply hold the shutter button down and it exits movie mode and shoots a still...then you can return to movie mode. (and for a guy like me who has been constantly juggling a video cam rig with ring light, battery belt, wireless audio, and smallhd monitor with a still camera rig with flash...this is like being in heaven)

And no, I'm not gonna abandon my "regular" video shooting of course. It's still the best. We would quickly lose all fans if things got boring and there was no wild sex with me being able to move the vid cam quickly at different angles etc. and with "porn style" lighting.

My idea is to shoot an "art" type scene (and yes...I think I have the "artistic" ability in my pinky to do that) every once in a great while. And then to use the movie feature on the camera to shoot a lot of the intros to our scenes.
It won't draw as much attention in public that way.

As it is now....I have a big still camera rig, a big vid cam rig, a whore with giant tits and I'm juggling all that in public on the set up to the scenes. People start gathering around, etc.

But with this camera...I'll just take it off the rig. Shoot the stills and vid and be done in 5 minutes for the intros. :)

And Elli...goddamn you are smoking hot. :) Your question about autofocus. Yes, it has autofocus...but it cannot continuously change focus. So the key is to work within a certain parameter and distance for each sequence.
That's why it's no good for "normal" porn shooting.

Thank you Robbie :) Have fun with your new camera! It looks nearly as lovely as your woman :)

Robbie 05-21-2012 04:45 PM

Shot the scene this morning at 8:30
NO lighting.
FULL AUTO.
Shot it in the bathtub and on my bed.

Took me 30 minutes from start to finish to shoot (including stills) lol

Easiest shoot I've ever done in my life.

I had to leave and go across town after shooting. So I didn't get back home until 2 p.m. (pacific time)

Then I had to hunt down some licensed music so I could have that cheesy "art porn" background music vibe. So I bought that, downloaded it and went to work in Adobe Premiere Pro around 2:30 p.m. Pacific time.

I just finished editing the scene. Now I'm rendering the full scene. Afterwards I still need to make vidcaps, process the stills, make the trailer and then upload it all and update the site.

So give me a couple of hours to do that and I'll post up the link for all the experts to see. :)

After you render it out, post to it GFY then do the vidcaps, stills etc...

I incorporate a 5d into some shoots and it's a pain in the ass. I want to see this tonight!

Can't wait to see what you came up with.

You'll see in a couple of hours. I have to stop what I'm doing and go eat a steak real quick. But I'll have everything done soon.

Keep in mind...the point of the shoot is that I didn't do anything that required any special knowledge or skills as some shooters have claimed. Just full auto and no lighting.

I'm guessing that there it can be a lot better with a little actual work involved. But this whole thing is done in a few hours from shooting to being "live" on the site.

And I didn't have to lift one heavy case. Didn't have to set up one single light. I didn't even use a flash for the damn stills. lol

Just point and shoot.

And next time...I'll do some outdoor stuff with it so you can really see the depth of field. You don't see that very much in the vid I did today because it's in the bathtub and in the bed. So there aren't really any objects more than a few inches away from her.

But I mostly wanted to use it with no lighting indoors today to see what happened.

Next "art" shoot I do will be outdoors and show off some depth of field. :)

Robbie 05-21-2012 07:26 PM

Okay...here ya go guys. The trailer to the scene I shot today in 30 minutes with no lighting and full auto. Complete point and shoot.

This Canon 5D Mk iii is pretty damn amazing.

candyflip 05-21-2012 07:29 PM

Not a bad start, but like you said...with a bit more work it can and will look a lot better.

Did you do this handheld or locked down on a tripod?

A little of both. I have my camera mounted on a Custom Brackets Digital Pro M rig...so it's fairly stabilized when I go handheld. But I mostly just put it on the tripod and hit "record" and kicked back like a big shot for that footage

dgraves 05-21-2012 08:50 PM

they just released the new Z-Finder for the mark III so i ordered one today. i'm not quite at the point where i want to shoot an entire video with the mark III but i like adding a little into each update for a different look.

it's a little tricky when you have to shoot the video and be in the video so right now i'm using a combination of two cameras.

Jay-Rock 05-21-2012 09:43 PM

Looks great Robbie it takes a bit to get use to but you can manually shoot on the fly if you use a high FSTOP. I am using the Mark II but the same rules apply.

Here is a handheld scene where I shoot the video at f11-f14 which makes is easier to focus while moving around. You also want to use a wide prime for getting stable shots handheld. The longer the focal length the harder it is to keep the shot steady.

http://nubiles.net/nina_james.html

Here is some video shot with 2.8 aperature for a more short depth of field. The camera is on a monopod and there are some slider shots. Short depth a field it not easy to shoot when moving around. This is why when you shoot sex scenes you need 2-3 cameras to get all the action. One camera should be dedicated for closeups and the other footage stationary angles so you always have good shots to cut to. These shots are from a Canon 70-200 2.8 L

Looks very good for a first effort. Looks a little out of focus from 101 to 107 at least on this end but not bad at all considering there was no light... good job :thumbsup

I shot this the second day I had mine, shot it manually and way over exposed it and just ruined it. Still getting the hang of it.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured.

But I wanted to give it a go with absolutely no light but regular indoor lighting in my house.

Basically what you guys see is the second time I have picked the camera up. The first post of this thread was my reaction when I first laid my hands on it the other day and shot a couple of minutes of vid and one still picture.

Then I had to play a gig here in town on Friday night so that took up my time. Had something to do on Saturday...and then couldn't convince CM to put on some makeup and shoot anything on Sunday. lol

So today (Monday) was the 2nd time I picked the camera up and turned it on. (I did some reading in between though to learn the menu)

Next time I grab it for video I'm gonna do an outside shoot in the golden hour.
Then, the time after that one...I'm gonna set up my kinos and light it up right indoors.

One thing I just proved to myself: if I were traveling somewhere and didn't want to fight with the TSA about my road case with lighting...and my road case with my big ass vid cam rig....I can just grab this 5D and with no lighting, I can pull off a pro shoot.

Pretty cool. :pimp

It is. That's what happens when you THINK you're in focus instead of making sure you're in focus.

I was sort of "testing" as I went to see how strict I needed to be. I learned that every time I decide to move with that camera...I need to make sure I do a good focus and not just assume that I'm still approximately the same distance as I was in the prior shot.

i was having the same issue and it's hard to tell when your target is in sharp focus without using a monitor or a magnifier like a z-finder. a good follow focus also helps to reduce camera movement rather than just using the focus ring. this one looks pretty nice:

If you're going to shoot video on a 5D, you're going to want to install the Magic Lantern custom firmware. It does a bit to make video mode seem like an actual video camera.

http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/M..._Firmware_Wiki

Should be available for the MkIII soon too.

I still think we have a few months to wait. I definitely want to pick up the FS700 once they update it record 4K. In the meantime, the FS100 does 60fps at 1080p...which is still pretty nice, considering the 5D MkIII only does 60fps at 720p.

Get a monitor with peaking. This shows red highlights where your subject is in focus and is extremely helpful when pulling focus. Here is a demonstration.

I've got a SmallHD monitor on my video camera rig. It has TONS of stuff for focus. I've never even used it for that...I just wanted a nice true hd camera mounted monitor.
But I could easily pop it onto the 5D :)
