Poll fail - you should speak about number of days in a week/month that you drink in order to be called alcoholic.

I drink every day, but its only about 1/3 pint of proper cider with meals.
that doesn't make me an alcoholic. If it does then the whole of Asturias is.

Alcoholics go to meetings. I don't go to meetings, I'm not a quitter!

Its not the point of getting drunk, its the point of why would a normal person drink 5 drinks EVERY DAY. No normal person would do that, its almost rock bottom alcoholic (rock bottom being drinking every day and getting drunk)

You well know that I am not talking about nothings like 1/3 pint of cider, thats not even drinking alcohol, its drinking for the meal.

You don't sound very fun.. did you have a problem with alcohol that you couldn't control?

I drink daily and I'm extremely functional and productive.

So, if you drink at dinner it does not count towards the drinking every day or 5 drinks a day?

Everyone has different definitions of it, but I would say if you drink until drunk multiple times per week every single week, you're probably an alcoholic. That or perhaps a more loose definition - if you drink to get drunk in nearly every social situation, i.e. in order to enjoy yourself you have to be drunk.

I realize that more extreme alcoholism is drinking ALONE all the time, and obviously functional alcoholics might drink several drinks a day and never be drunk, but certainly still have a drinking problem, but I think the fine line between alcoholism and not is more within social situations and drinking irresponsibly on a regular basis.

Part of the reason I say that was because I would go out drinking with a friend a few times a week, and even though we had used to have fun all the time without any alcohol, it became our thing to down a six pack plus a few mixed drinks every time, which is pretty much what it took us to get drunk. At the time I wouldn't have said I was an alcoholic, but looking back on it, I most certainly was. It wasn't til my friend got a DUI that we both stopped it. Til then, we were each blowing $100+ a week on alcohol, which at the time was a lot of money to me.

I've been addicted to soda in the past and quit that too, and though that was daily half gallon or more of soda - every single day, I feel it was similar to the alcohol in that it was an expected thing. Nearly every time I went out with my friend over the span of a few years after we turned 21, we drank.

We have talked with others about the idea of franchises but we have only been doing this since July (tonight will be our 20th meetup); I'd like to give it a year to see where we are at. TBH, it is tough doing it weekly; we may have to consider bi-weekly or something. Our biggest problem is finding new places that meet our requirements for beer selection that are within our grid.

I know I can find a dozen others if I expanded our range by 10 miles, but I know we would have fewer attendees (if any). I know how far people will drive on a Thursday evening at 5:30-6:00.

If you drink daily (and probably at least 5 drinks judging from the fact that 5 is a minimum option i n a poll) you are definitely alcoholic.

I did not say that you are not productive, I am saying that you are alcoholic, thats 100%.

1/3 of a drink may count towards 5 drinks a day. You just have to drink rest of the 4 and 2/3 of the drinks :)
I meant that 1/3 drink a day is nothing, especially in some parts of the world where it is traditional to drink a little with daily meals.

1/3 of a drink and 5+ drinks are 2 completely different things.

Nothing new, most alcoholics (OP included) do that - they deny it. :2 cents:

52% of people so far agree with me (that 5 drinks every day is being alcoholic), so not sure why such a big laugh :)

Its your poll so you should have defined drinks.

If its not defined most people count drinks in a similar way, something like:
glass of wine, shot of hard liquor, cocktail, bottle of beer

Pretty funny, I have a normal size smaller glass that I do hard liquor on the rocks in and I can easily fit 5 shots and ice in it so I guess that's 5 drinks in 1 glass. :1orglaugh

Like I said - its your poll so you should have defined what a "drink" is. So do not ask what I call a drink, define what you called a drink.
And its nothing funny, if YOU think that a drink is x ml of something and you poor 5 of them into one glass then they are still 5 drinks (at least in this context where we are trying to find out how much of alcohol makes you alcoholic).

So define what is a "drink" in your poll :2 cents:

how much is that?

Let me explain - if this is a poll then people who vote should know +- what a "drink" is.

If you put 120ml of vodka in your big galss with ice and you call it 1 drink and another person is drinking 40ml shots and calling each of them 1 drink and you both think that 360ml of hard liquor is "alcoholic" then:
you would say "3 drinks is alcoholic"
that other person would say " 9 drinks is alcoholic"

While you both would be talking about same amount...

See why it is important to define what a drink is?

And since you did not define most people assume what is usually assumed when you try to define a "drink" (a shot, a bottle of beer, glass of wine, regular cocktail etc)

Kovachi 11-29-2012 06:31 PM

I'm not sure how many ounces it is, I'm on my 2nd glass like that so probably 8 oz of whiskey, not much

JP-pornshooter 11-29-2012 06:33 PM

real alcoholics are the ones you see stop at the liquor store, get couple small bottles and down them right then and there, get back in the car and back to business.
or the ones who have a "roadie" with them to work, go out to the car during lunch and swig down..
the rest of us who drink a couple glasses of wine or beer with dinner, sorry not alcoholics.

1 per hour between 1 pm and 11 pm so only around 32 oz of whiskey per day, very normal for a business man.

You haven't added 1 drink daily for your votes?

You need to get out of reality daily, you've an addiction

CurrentlySober 11-30-2012 05:53 AM

When you find that you spend all day, everyday, posting about bodily waste, to an uninterested adult message board...

You can safely say that you are an alcoholic... :2 cents:
