Canada has two official languages, not one as some seem to want to believe. It's not a second language, it's one of two official languages. As such, you have the right, as a citizen, to request to be served in either official language. THAT is why there is such a requirement.

My wife works for dept of defense. When she decided to apply for a gov't position in such a capacity, she went to night school to re-learn French as she had forgotten most of what she learned in high school. But she took the initiative to actually get qualified versus complaining about it or that it was an unfair requirement.

Canada offers both languages in its public school system, thus it is up to each individual if they actually want to learn it or not. Most, however, blow it off and then complain about the gov't requirements afterwards.

It's a whole lot easier to complain about something than it is to take the initiative to do something about it.

As for the decent jobs being gov't based, I am not sure where you're located, but I've held a couple of VERY lucrative positions that were anything but gov't jobs. And they certainly were not union jobs (I'd never work for a union).

For the record, I cannot speak French either, but understand why there is a requirement for a federal position.

I will agree, however, it's a giant bureaucracy.

Wrong. I have actually quit a job when they voted to go unionized. In my 35 years in the workforce, I have worked for one unionized environment (in the early 80's in Toronto) and would never work for one again. If you want to pay a voluntary tax to someone and limit your earning potential for the comfort of a specific job, that's your choice. I choose to remove limitations on myself and have made a very comfortable living as a result. I despise the fact my wife is forced to be unionized. But that's her choice.

Most of the big unionized auto plants in my area closed up / moved and the only big one left is non-unionized Toyota. They are obviously the only one who could afford to operate in this area because they weren't getting assfucked by the unions.

If you give the unions too much power then they drive everything right into the ground. Hell, they even rape the company on the way out with their insane settlement packages for employees that lose their jobs. Some guys from Ford who were losing their job were going out and buying new vehicles with their settlement money.

Great for the employee for a while, until they lose their job. Then it's back to $13 an hour jobs stacking shelves at the local hardware store for all the poor saps with their grade 12. And those high paying jobs never come back to the area.

Blackmonsters: I am not saying unions do not have their place. I am simply saying that they do not have a place for me. I found unions in general to limit my potential. Thus, I have purposely chosen not to be employed by one since the 80's.

In hindsight, it was the right decision for me, as there's no way I would have been in the position I am today had I opted to just stick with a union job as my career choice (and that's even if they had not already sent the job overseas by the time I retired, leaving me wondering about a pension/retirement plan).

On a side note, I'd personally MUCH rather our tax dollars be put into more important issues, like healthcare, education, and appealing to companies to create jobs in Canada, than (over)spending on "defense", while simultaneously eroding my rights and freedoms. Canada, unfortunately, has its fair share of that nonsense too.

Despite the fact that I was going to be working with Engineers in the US and the UK, and despite the fact that I was going to be working with some US imports, and despite the fact that he told me I was the best candidate he had interviewed since they started trying to hire someone for the position, I was denied the job because my french wasn't good enough.

At that moment I decided to give up completely and never even bother trying to work for another company. The SHIT that the Quebec government imposes on people and companies over language just to "protect Quebec culture" is insane. So I gave up job hunting and decided to work for myself. I've been doing it for 20 years now and its awesome.

Sure, in Quebec is very different..The 'language police' they have there is something you won't see anywhere else in the country. My buddy who is a plumber won't even cross the river here because he could get fined for not having bilingual signs on his van. Totally retarded but honesty, if I decided to live in Quebec, I would make sure I know the language because otherwise, you're really limited. I personally will never live in Quebec simply because I don't see myself ever learning the language and the last thing I would want to do is have to deal with people in various situations from every day bullshit to healthcare and not be able to understand it. For the english people who have lived in quebec for generations, it really sucks. you're basically a second class citizen speaking english in quebec but for those not stuck there, there is a whole country out there that doesn't do that.

I think you really don't know that much about canada or canadians and are just going by stereotypes. There are fights for a lot of things here. We fought for universal healthcare, we fought for freedom in WW1 and WW2. women fought for the right to vote and won a couple years before the US passed the same amendment. just recently after outrage over a new bill that would make internet surveillance more prolific it was tossed out. And not to mention how lately so many countries are looking to canada and seeking advice as to how canada didn't get hit with the recession like most of the world did. we may not be screaming from the mountaintops to 'look at me' but we're here.

This is not saying much.

I was actually in Montreal this weekend. A friend of mine lives there. He is born and raised French Canadian and hates it. This seems to be the ultimate consensus of everyone he knows as well except for the people on this board. I am not sure about people outside of the Quebec Province who are not forced to do everything in French, but from speak with all of his friends and family there. It seems to be getting a little out of control. People can speak about America all they want and about making laws to better your country. Thats all fine and dandy, but my friend just opened up a convenience store, I believe they are called 'Dep's'. The Government gets to decide if the name he wants for his store is ok or not, because it does seem to be french enough for them. You are not as forced into the French culture in France, as much as you are in Quebec. (this is what my friend who lives there is saying). This seems a little overboard for me. I must say though. The food in Montreal is excellent. It is a beautiful city. I wish to go back in the summertime as it snowed basically everyday this weekend.
