Simple, the iMac is no larger than a normal 27" display and probably smaller in depth than many of those. The build quality is better than anything you could build yourself and the display itself is awesome. I have the iMac and another 27" Apple Display side by side. No box needed.

When I worked there, the CRTs of all Macs were set to 85Hz and not the usual 60 like everyone else was using to make them look better and easy on the eyes...

Wonder if they do the same with flat screens, no ones told me..

Current Mac displays use very high quality panels. Rich colours, deep blacks, semi gloss glass fronted. Very nice on the eyes.

Makes sense.

It's OS X and yes it's better.

Here's why.

A fully compliant POSIX Unix under the hood.
Better memory management.
Better Productivity Apps
All Adobe Apps run better on OS X than on Windows
Microsoft Office for Mac is better than the Windows version.
If I want to ssh to a server I just open a terminal window and do it - no shitty Putty required.
It comes with included Apps.
If it's the iMac then it's the smallest form factor computer you can buy.
The iMac inbuilt monitor is better than any 3rd party PC monitor I have seen or used.
It has a FREE and complete development environment that can be used to create apps for sale on the App Store - the most profitable App store there is.

Want me to go on ?

The Mac is just better than the alternatives, especially if you're a developer.

Go to your windows machine and compile ffmpeg with flaac support and MP4Box - unless you spend a day installing kludge based development tools, you can't without a lot of effort - you need to use a binary which may or may not suit your needs.

Got the Bash shell on your PC ? Does the Windows machine run MarsEdit for managing multiple blogs ?

There's no comparison.

(Yes I have two Windows machines and several Macs so I can share an informed opinion)

Hmm don't need any of that on a daily basis. Well except putty but I just open that up and stick it in the background

When working there, I used to hack into the other workers' computers, remotely turn the volume all the way up then have Apple Talk say ridiculous things to scare them using Terminal. That's the only reason why I'd prefer a Mac over PC.. :upsidedow

(as I typed out this reply while surfing gfy on my pair of 30 inch cinema displays I accidentally stubbed my toe on the mac pro under my desk)

The value of a Mac can't be measured in dollars unless you're including the value of the immensely improved productivity, especially if you're a programmer/coder.

Having Unix under the hood, being able to install any Unix package, being POSIX compliant, being able to open up a terminal window and ssh without having to install shitty clients like Putty.

Then add the best productivity that exists for any operating system and you've got a really good value machine.

My step-father has been hardcore unix, mainframe and oracle developer for over 20 years and never ever used or felt need to use macs. What kind of apps are you developing?

You need to use OS X to develop iOS & OS X apps using Xcode + ObjectiveC or Swift.
