Even then, you still have an extreme disadvantage. The intruder has the element of surprise. Unless you are one of those people that have a shotgun loaded and in your hand, the chances of you getting to your gun cabinet and loading it, or even making it to the place you keep your loaded gun, are pretty small. I'll bet more people survive a home invasion because the intruder has them secured compared to those who try to go for a weapon. Not saying that a reason to not a own a gun. I'm just saying, the "protection" reason is full of holes.

This is a perfect case of the system failing and political correctness winning. If a person is such a threat to a school they aren't allowed on campus wearing something they could conceal a weapon in, they should be checked out and put on a list blocking them from buying guns. Sure, they could still get them if they really wanted to, but it seems like nobody did anything.

They could have not allowed him back in a public school for starters. Put him in a school that is better suited to handle troubled kids which he obviously was. That they didn't have any warning is BS. Your school records follow you everywhere. So they continued to accept him in public school and continued to let him get booted out. A change of scenery doesn't fix a situation like this. Actually it probably made it worse because he had to start meeting new people over and over.

No one checks you when you go to a high school. You can walk right in and no one is going to stop you.

My kid's middle school had "some" protection. The school was surrounded by a tall brick wall and in some places a tall iron fence. When school is in session the only way out or in is through the main door which leads you to the office. However... All you need to do is pull your car up over the curb next to the fence and you can easily scale the wall. It's not exactly rocket science.

My kid's high school has zero protection. It's a high school with thousands of kids, half of which have in and out privileges. It's a logistical nightmare. It's a huge campus - all outdoors - with a dozen entrances and exits. Even if they could lock down every exit all a gunman would have to do is wait until school lets out and a thousand kids are leaving at once.

This school today had a dedicated police officer on site and it didn't help at all.

So it appears this voter reg is for nicolas cruz and not nikolas cruz so I'm off to find out Nikolas' DOB for a search of the DB on my own :) Could be a data entry error or could not be..

Not sure about bankrupt California but it was a bit different here even when I went to school... My high school in TN always had the doors locked and this was back in the early 90s. Back in those days it wasn't anything to see a shotgun in the back window of a pickup in a school parking lot either. Late 80's in FL we had police officers and drug dogs walking around the school all day.
