There are approximately 22 US Embassies and Consulates between Honduras and the US / Mexico border. There is no reason to travel all the way to the CA / Tj border (the absolutely farthest distance possible) if your intent is to file a legitimate "asylum" claim.

There is definitely no reason to make your own young children suffer a many thousand mile journey with no clothes, no food, no water and no money and put their lives at risk if you have a legitimate asylum claim which could be filed at any number of Consulates and Embassies which are nearby.
