The vast, vast, vast majority of those in serious trouble have pre-existing conditions. Culling of the herd????

Of course there are a lot of other factors, like the size of the countries, their healthcare systems, their preparedness (excessive testing and contract tracing) and how disciplined people are

But as other people said, even if it only helps a certain percentage it still can have a huge impact.

Also you don't just wear it to protect yourself from not getting it, a big part of it is if you do have it (but are asymptomatic) you are far less likely to spread it to others. That's the biggest help of the masks which most people in the west don't think about, most think it's to protect them, but the main thing is to protect others.

In Asia it's very common to wear masks when you are sick, usually people mainly were masks to protect others.

The CDC just did a 180 and now recommends "Cloth, non-medical masks".

The WHO (Not the rock band) does NOT recommend wearing a mask if you are healthy.

I was out and about today in Brooklyn. Tons of people not socially distancing, not wearing masks. There's no enforcement either way. Some supermarkets keep people waiting outside, but inside everyone is on top of each other.

And the SUBWAY IS STILL RUNNING. But - they've cut service - so the trains running are PACKED WITH PEOPLE.

Either isolate or don't. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's being half-assed...

Here in Korea everyone wears a mask, 100% of the people, but it's not mandatory.

I lived in Malaysia 3 years, worked 2 months in Shanghai, several months in Bangkok. Asians tend to wear masks even in the good times, I think that the Avian Bird Flu of 2003 started that...

I always thought it began in China during the eighties/nineties due to terrible pollution from the factories. America out-sourced its' manufacturing to China, China built thousands of factories causing massive air pollution, millions began wearing masks.

Cloth mask stops about 80% of exhaled virus, and stops about 60 % of inhaled one.

So, if an asymptomatic carrier ( about 20 % population) exhales 100 Units of the virus, only 20 Units becomes airborne, the rest is contained in his mask. A passing person wearing a mask stops about 60 % of the 20 Units, so he potentially inhales a maximum of 12 Units of the original amount. Such reduced load definitely reduces the risk of a full blown infection.

Argument against the mask is akin to refuse to use a condom since it is only 90 % effective.

Makes sense about the pollution. Every year in Indonesia and Malaysia the palm oil plantations burn vegetation to clear the fields - a/k/a smog season. First, Indonesia blames Malaysia, then Malaysia blames Indonesia and Singapore blames everyone.

The few times I have been out, I have had mine on in the car just so I don't have to mess with putting it on once I am where I need to be. Mine has to be positioned just right so I don't fog up my glasses.

I'm always out in my big rig. I put on a mask when I get out now. Yeah it fogs up my glasses too, so I take them off. I need them to drive and read only.
They take my temp at the places I deliver before letting me off.one place has me wash my hands before entering!
