Maybe you had the new South African variant? I believe that they've discovered very recently that it bypasses immunity from regular COVID-19 in 50% of the cases. Still early data though.

Today, same thing. I have aching at the back of my legs and my coffee tasted bitter.

I don't need a test. I know it's covid.

I have a friend right now who lost sense of taste and had lots of other symptoms, seemed like an obvious dead ringer for COVID, but it's actually not COVID. You can't assume the first time was COVID unless you had the test. There's still influenzas and lots of other things floating around.

It's quite common to lose your sense of taste and smell when you have a cold, no?

Honestly, I don't know.
I don't ever remember it like this before. I know you bet bunged up and stuff which I guess stops you smelling a bit.

This is what happened with us.
I went to by some Prosecco for the wife. I spent a bit extra cos it was Halloween and bought a nice bottle, more expensive you know.
Anyway, she opened it and immedietly said it was horrible and why did I buy such cheap stuff. At this time I didn't think it was Covid but we joked about it.
Next day she complained about the coffee, asking why we had bought such cheap coffee and it tasted bitter. I tried to explain it was the same coffee we always bought.

Later that day I noticed the coffee tasted bitter for me as well. Really horrible and I couldn't drink it.
One of the most amazing losses of smell was when I was cooking a pasta dish. It's a really smelly concoction I like to do with lots of smoky bacon, cured meats, garlic, onions etc. The smell usually wafts around the house and smells amazing.
My wife and I were both stood in the kitchen just like. I can't smell it. Even with a head over the pan there was nothing. Not a hint of a smell.

Is it?
According to official stats (check them for yourself) illness like influenza seem to be eradicated and don;t exist anymore.

not sure if "quite common", but yes, if cold is strong and you have your nose stuffed, than yes. Your nose doesn't work properly basically.
the taste, I don't know...

Isn't COVID-19 one of these viruses that cause something we call "cold"?

Not really, no. I lost me sense of smell and had no symptoms of a cold.

As I read - it is similar to that, what we call "cold" but more more easily spread and hazardous to health :(
