I have a million and 1 memories of various friends and our Rocky outings:glugglug I was cast Riff-Raff at our theater for awhile. I would love to see it in the theater these days with updated lines, I could imagine,

Criminologist: "Brad and Janet had both tasted..."
1/2 of audience: "Frank's cock!"
Other half of audience: "It's a weapon of mass destruction!"

Heh, I wasn't knocking Hairspray by saying any JW film prior to it, Hairspray was great! (but the thread was about movies that are so bad they're good:)) I have the Pink Flamingos DVD that was a double feature with Female Trouble. John Waters director commentaries are my favorite DVD extra ever. The man truly is demented but he is hilarious. He was always a perfect throw into the mix when they would have him on Politically Incorrect. I could listen to him for hours.

Speaking of Pink Flamingos, back when JW made it he basically used his record collection to cull the soundtrack (often complete with pops and crackles). When they released the 25th Anniversary video and the DVD much of the music was changed because of copyright holders not wanting the songs included. JW did a good job of negotiating replacement music but to me it changed the feel of some scenes and the digital quality music takes away from the trashiness of the movie. I lucked up ages ago on a copy of the long out of print VHS of the original version and for that movie the occasional scratchy from the transfer print and the original rough mono soundtrack was part of the film's character, afterall they were the filthiest people alive!

LOL, I haven't been in about a year. I started going in PA and then in Boston and more recently London. However, they got kicked out of the London cinema (after having been there for decades). I went to the last showing but still waiting for them to settle down a bit and find a new place.

I am the BBW Columbia :)

titmowse 03-26-2004 08:19 AM

"bad" is such a subjective term. i think rocky horror is a good movie that pays homage to bad movies.

somebody mentioned "the forbidden zone". whoa. flashback.

the original "night of the living dead" was pretty cornball.

JerseyPuma 03-26-2004 08:34 AM

I dont know about the rest of you (and from the replies it seems like there are only a few who think along those same lines), but when i think about movies that are so bad that they are good, im thinking about movies that are made so horribly that they are funny to laugh at.

The number one movie of this kind of ALL TIME is a movie called Troll 2. This movie is VERY hard to find, i picked up a copy on ebay a couple of years ago. This movie should be shown to all film students as the anti-film, i.e. exactly what you do NOT want to do when making a movie. The mistakes number in the hundreds. The acting is the worst I have ever seen apart from Chris Klein in anything he has ever been in. The premise is completely ludicrous. In total, it is a joy to watch. I laughed more at this movie than most other movies i will ever see in my life.

Find it and watch it.

Evil Dead
Manos the Hands of Fate
Plan 9 from Outer Space
The Toxic Avenger
Surf Nazi's Must Die

Most of my Rocky going was in the mid to late 80's. Last time it played within several hundred miles was about 6 years ago for a couple of months but Lowes (home improvement store) bought the theater to level it for a bigger parking lot. I drag out the DVD every once in awhile. I wish they could have gotten more than just Richard O'Brien and Patricia Quinn for the director's commentary.

mardigras 03-26-2004 09:07 AM

OMG, I can believe I was just posting about The Forbidden Zone last night and today I check the director's website http://www.richardelfman.com/ and find it is being re-released to theaters next month!!!

Richard Elfman is Danny Elfman's brother and Danny did the music for the film and makes an appearance as Satan.

If you are a fan of truly bizarre but fun films I can't recommend this one highly enough. Cardboard cutout sets, outrageous music, absurd storyline, cool animation and a cast from the 5th dimension. There's a trailer for it on Richard Elfman's website. If it doesn't come to a theater near you or isn't available at a local video store it's worth picking up online. It was out of print for years but a couple of years ago they started selling it again on richardelfman.com, don't know if it's available anywhere else or not.
