Making insurance mandatory actually is the only way to achieve affordable universal health care insurance. For those who can't afford it, it should be subsidized to the point where they can afford it, but it should still be mandatory.

Without mandatory insurance, the treatment of the uninsured drives up costs for the insured, ironically causing costs to rise to such a point where many can in fact not afford insurance any more.

Not just because they're not paying for insurance and others end up paying for them, but also because their reluctance to seek treatment often leads them to delay treatment until mild, easily treated conditions have become so serious that they require much more expensive treatment.

Well when people cant afford 400 dollars for rent, how will they come up with 400 more dollars to pay for insurance? Under her plan they will be ticketed for not being covered, then when they cannot afford that they will be jailed for not paying the ticket. With mandatory health insurance, prices will go down. Of course, the government should also step in, and subsidize insurance for those who truly cannot afford it otherwise.

What many Americans don't realize is just how bad the current situation is. Right now, America has the highest per capita health care costs in the world. It also has the highest rate of preventable deaths under 75 from treatable conditions of the top 20 wealthiest nations.

If America did as well as the best-performing nations (which are, of course, ones with universal health care), it would save 100000 lives a year. That's over twenty times the number of American soldiers to have died in Iraq over the past 5 years.

Obama undoubtedly knows this, too. By saying he doesn't want to make health insurance mandatory for those who can not afford it, he is effectively saying he will not make it affordable for everyone. That means the problem will not get solved. Costs will stay too high, tens of thousands of people will continue to die pointless deaths.

Obama's stance on this issue is pandering of the worst kind. He's pretending to "protect" the people who can't afford health care, but at the cost of their own lives.

What troubles me is Obama's choice to use this particular issue as something to compromise on, and the way in which he does so. This particular type of pandering reduces the actual lives of people to a mere political tool.

Another good example of Obama's pandering is Iraq. Undoubtedly, the war in Iraq should never have been started the way it was started. Undoubtedly, it is of the foremost importance that US troops are pulled back - especially because they are by their mere presence fueling the fire.

However, Obama gives hard time tables for pulling back the troops. Since he does not know the future, there is a very real chance that sticking to such time tables brings the kind of instability to Iraq that could cost many thousands of Iraqi lives.

It reminds me of Bush, to whom Colbert said: "Your beliefs are the same Wednesday as they were Monday, no matter what happens on Tuesday."

Making these promises means one of three things. He is a liar, he is incapable of recognizing the possibility that something unforeseen happens, or he is someone who sticks to his plans no matter what happens - even if reality reveals his plans to be bad ones.

Since he is not an idiot, either the first or the last is true. Either he is willfully making promises he knows are ridiculous, or he is making ridiculous promises, intending to follow through on them merely for political gain.

Obama panders at least as much as the others. I hope he wins the general election (mainly because Clinton has no chance of getting the Democratic nomination), but the idea that he represents "change" from traditional politics is laughable.

I have a friend that doesn't make a whole lot and does pay a ton in child support and claims he can't afford insurance for himself or his kids and also can't afford to put any money away for them in a college funds. Sounds reasonable considering his circumstances. BUT he CAN afford cigarettes and beer. He buys meats and cheese from the deli and buy the higher end breads and shit isntead of going for the cheaper generic versions. He buys the "name brand" clothes instead of getting the Faded Glory clothes from wal-mart. He moved last year and got place 5 miles from town and he drives a SUV. So in reality he COULD afford insurance he chooses to spend his money on other things and I'm supposed to pick up the difference? He's not the only one I see tons of people in my town that get food stamps and magically have money for cigareetes and beer. If you stop smoking and drinking you'd have enough for food.

In my state you HAVE to have car insurance. So how is this different? Anyways medical saving accounts should count toward insurance and be tax deductable.

I don't if the government takes care of things like childhood immunizations or subsidzing flu shots since these things pay off.

The thing that really stood out to me was how oft reported it was that her campaign was disorganized and problematic for her while his worked like a well oiled machine.
