Congrats on your degree. Job well done.

psili 01-20-2009 06:04 PM

Congrats.

Ignore the negative responses and good luck in your endeavors.

This is GFY, after all, so you have to expect some retarded arguments around your accomplishment. This being GFY, "accomplishment" is pretty much determined by post count. So, well... yea. I'd take college and its costs over post count any day.

yeah but it was a stupid explanation based on absolutely no knowledge on your part and some ideas that you have in your head about how something should be run, when you've never run it or learned about running it..

If someone said that if a carpenter can't design a house, he's useless, he'd be laughed outta here...It's the same kind of bullshit you're saying now.

no, that's like saying that if a carpenter couldn't lay the joists, rafters, supports for the floors, cut out the spaces for electrical wiring in the studs, and be able to point and tell me where the insulation and the shingles go he would be useless.

your analogy is erroneous.

Albeit I'm referencing your comment WAY after the thread's taken off, and you've posted many times already - why did you post this? Arrogance is cool and all, but really. Why?

ExLust 01-20-2009 11:04 PM

Congrats on your educational achievement.

I can assure you he has plenty of experience and some very good references. He would have done just fine without the degree, but he will also do much better with it.

Congrats polle54 :thumbsup

Thanks a lot Brett :)

in 90% of the jobs software engineers just happen to perform jobs of a programmer...
but it's like comparing a construction worker and a civil engineer, they both work kinda in the same field, but they are nowhere close to the same... :2 cents:

Thanks for pointing this out as it seems to be a general misconception. I do program some of the time but my main job is to build the software architechture and make sure that each component is abstract and stabile and so on.

I am very glad I took and education because there's no way in hell I would have taken the time to learn the most complicated software structures and design patterns.
For the ones who doesn't know this kind of education:
We don't code most of the time
We learn principles and patterns for building correct software
We get introduced to all technologies so we can make an educated decision between them
We learn hardware programming of robot arms, softdrink dispensers, washing machines and so on.
We have electronics and math on a high level.
We also learn about signal processing and manipulation.
We have to take a course in programming to mobile units like Windows Mobile.
and so on.
Altogether 36 courses and 6 months in practical experience.

It simply does not compare to a self educated guy who might be a solid master who owns me in C++ or C#. If you are that good, you are the kind of guy I wanted hire to do that part of the work.
I have the utmost respect for people who choose not to get an education and just program away, but I just enjoy seeing the bigger picture :)

moeloubani 01-21-2009 06:29 AM

lots of people say they can do it but very few can

im just wrapping up my last year (fifth) and in May I'll get a BSc in chemical physics.

The biggest waste of my time, ever.

Would have been such a better idea to do something like law, business, computers, but I did good in high school in chemistry and physics and math and figured I'd try for the hardest thing.

HUGE mistake :( now its too late to go back, just a few more months and im done :)

yeah i wasted tons of time, but id like to think im a better person for it in terms of what i know and what i can do. it also makes me feel good to know that i did something that sets me apart from the AlienQs of the world.

your analogy is erroneous.

Someone has to DESIGN where the joints, rafters, supports for the floors, etc. has to be...

You're still relating the one who works with their hands to the one who works with his mind....

your LOGIC is erroneous

I might if you care to bump PPS up to $35-40 instead of $20 as it is now... It's too low to compete with any of the others.
