I was inquiring more from a legal standpoint although personally I would not have taken a swing at him unless he attempted to swing at me which I did not see him do. I think some people act tough and often get in peoples faces with no intention of physically attacking but rather just hoping to intimidate and that the other will back down. Once they try and throw the first punch however, their true intentions are revealed and its time to defend and disable.

In the eyes of the law, if you feel you are in danger you can use "reasonable force" to defend yourself. The Karate instructor only took one shot and kept the PIMP from striking him.

Ok, was always curious about the legal considerations of reacting in such a situation. While the PIMP did not actually attack him I suppose the karate expert could say he felt he was in danger for whatever reason when the PIMP got up in his face or maybe the PIMP said something to him to indicate impending harm.
