Won't that slow down your connection to be downloading huge files like that?

I'm looking into getting one of these mega boxes which you can use multiple satelites on and use cards to decode multiple channel streams.

I think they can handle around 3,000 channels and 4-6 sats at once.

And the best things about it is, the channels and networks still get ad-revenue while you get tv for free (after a bit of investment)

Yes justify your theivery. If you like it buy it. SIMPLE. ZERO excuse for illegal downloading ZERO. So quit trying to justify it you CAN'T.

and yeah if you hate commercials get a dvr and do what i do. When a hour show comes on I'll hit pause on live tv and come back 20 mins into the show and then you can watch the whole show in about 40 mins fast forwarding commercials and getting to the end of the show about the same time as if you watched it from start to end

Good point. A DVR is what I need. Dish Networks 720 I'll prob get someday along with HD. It's pretty sweet with like 60 hours of hd recording capability I think.

I'll prob con't DLing and of course not cancell TV and still never have time to watch everything. But its fun having good shows "on deck".

I don't want to spend time looking for shows, or making sure its good resolution, or wait for it to download. Most cable companies, mine included offer a pretty nice DVR that records all the shows I want, knows when they're repeats, and allows me to dictate when I watch....and I don't watch an ad unless I want to.

Also, my cable company will take notice and flag you if you start downloading like crazy constantly. Even if they didn't, I still prefer to watch 30 Rock or Breaking Bad on 50 inch DLP.

You're painting a far worse picture of the Tv watching situation than actually exists.

Oh yeah, how the fuck do you channel surf? That's how you find the best shit to watch sometimes.

All good points. But I never channel surf. I can tell ya whats on the basic stations. Same old stuff. When I sit down I want good stuff now. Even if you have the full package and lots of stations to surf, emm same deal. Mostly all movies and infomercials. If I want a movie I pull out a dvd.

But hey different personalities. It's all good as long as your show is good. Very individual tv is. :thumbsup

The DirecTV HD package is great. I set the DVR to record all my favorite series, documentaries and MMA fight shows automatically and watch them on my 52" HDTV. Downloading and watching through a computer monitor or pc-to-tv hook up is not even an option in terms of convenience compared to this. I never purchase DVDs or go to the theater anymore, so I get my money's worth from my approx. $105/month DirecTV HD package.

Vjo 04-25-2009 11:53 PM

That's a nice setup. Well done. I hope to have the same soon myself with Dish Network when I can get an installer out.

For $105 you must get the whole shabang.

Anyhow they have the 720 DVR for like only $5 a month more if you lease it than what I am paying for basic now. Gets ya HD and Basic for like $60/Mo Tops. And they pay local installation. Plus gets you the 720 DVR which is what I need. A good DVR will solve all TV woes. :thumbsup

I've been considering getting rid of cable too. It costing me a good chunk and then on top of that I only have basic. Im stuck with comcast because I have too many tree's and cant get dish which would be like 30 bucks cheaper.

I can watch nearly every show online (legally) the only thing I haven't found a solution for is live sports.

why would you recommend a gui based OS for a machine without a screen.

linux

much better choice.

and you can simply telnet into it and manage it remotely from any machine in your house.

I'm doing some remodeling work in my house and I had my tv and cable box unplugged for over a week and I barely even noticed. I downloaded my favorite shows online for the week which is what I usually end up doing anyway since I no longer have tivo :(

lacuna 04-26-2009 05:46 PM

We cancelled satellite last year. First week without TV was like quitting smoking. But once you get past the withdrawal pains, it's totally worth it. :thumbsup
