It is not like he is the first president to take a vacation. All presidential vacations and trips are expensive. You can't expect the president of the United States to grab his two bags,hop on a Southwest flight, rent a car and stay at a motel 6 and just have a cell phone you can call if you need him for anything.

Anywhere he goes, no matter where it is or why he is going there, he has a team that travels with him and it isn't cheap. It has always been this way, but right now everyone is hyper aware of every dollar that is being spent so Obama would catch hell if he spent an extra few bucks to get the quilted bath tissue to wipe his ass with.

As a little perspective. It costs roughly $56,000 per hour to operate Air Force One. To fly round trip from Washington DC to Crawford Texas and back cost around $259,000. Bush when to Crawford Texas 77 times during his 8 years in office. That is a total of around $20 million just for Air Force One. That doesn't count all the cost of having the staff and security and everything out there with him.

I think Presidential vacations are a good thing.. to a point.

I just wish government officials were paid on performance and rewarded for their good work. In this scenario, Obama would owe us money and would only get major holidays off.

Secret service always advance, first ladies sometimes travel separately based on schedules, WH staff members always come, hotels are always rented next to where he is staying, etc.

Considering the President always stays in the finest Presidential Suite wherever he travels, do you think his staff stays at the Super 8 down the street? No, they take up a few floors of that very fine hotel. In fact, for security reasons, nobody is allowed to be directly above, below, or next to him.

I hate this kind of shit. You need to understand that whenever the president moves, he moves with a lot of people and a lot of equipment. There's advance teams for the secret service, the secret service fly out helicopters in advance, his motorcade, hundreds of staff - all of whom have to be housed for the duration.

This isn't just Obama. It's every president.

Bush vacationed as you call it at his ranch mostly, which was outfitted to do work. His ranch was more like Camp David, which Obama doesn't even consider being on a vacation
