Root Canals.... Who's enjoyed having one?
I got a tooth that needs a root canal but reading up on them they say root canals are short term and could require pulling anywhere from a month after to 6 years... I'm not paying for a root canal, and a crown just to have to have it pulled later, so I think I'm just gonna get it pulled.
Shit is bothering the fuck out of me right now. :Oh crap |
have it pulled and get an implant

I've never had to have a tooth pulled after. And I've had my share of dental work. Get the root canal and crown.
|
Can't afford it? I'm sure they'll take payments. If its a back tooth maybe having it pulled is best but if its a visible tooth I'd get the work done.
|
Get the root canal and crown. I had to have one of my back teeth done after the thirty year old filling I got when I was a teenager disintegrated and it has served me pretty well for several years now. Your back teeth get the most grinding pressure when chewing and you're going to need it.

Or maybe people can start selling pre-chewed food.

60 for a root canal 300 for a implant |
I've had a few root canals over the years, one or two are over 20 years old and the most recent is at least 10.
I've never heard of root canals being a short term fix. None of my rc'd teeth have needed to be extracted, though I have had to replace a couple of the crowns over the years. Get a good endodontist, have it done right the first time and you should be good to go. Good luck! |
I got one in the USA, the dude drilled too deep and put a tiny hole in the bottom. As he filled the tooth part of the filling went into the hole and under the tooth. Now I have 4 or 5 tiny fragments under the tooth that need to be surgeically removed. To top it off, the tooth cracked in a few places shortly after, so the entire tooth is a wash AND I have to have shit removed from inside my gum under the tooth.
Good luck. |
If it's a back tooth just get that shit pulled. Rinse your mouth out with some peroxide and put a cottonball soaked with clove oil on the tooth for pain.

I had one root canal done w.o. anesthesia, not doing that again. You feet twitch when they rip out the nerve lol - many years ago, at the time it seemed like a good idea to save some bucks >< |
|
I wont say 'enjoyed' exactly, but I did end up furiously masturbating, and shot my load over the dentist... :2 cents:

root canal hold for years if you take care of your teeth... and use a good dentist... I have an implant and that wasn't much fun at all.. looks great though |
I've had 3 root canals, all of them still fine. oldest is 20+ years, that was capped though.
if you dont cap them the tooth can get brittle and break. |
I just had a root canal on #36 yesterday.
Wasn't fun. 2 hours in the chair. But if you think pulling it is a better option, fill your boots. It's not a better option. |
I had one a few years back. Its fine. Getting a tooth pulled and not replacing it soon is not a good idea. Your teeth will shift.
|
I had one. Then they wanted to do it again. I just had them pull the fucker and got an implant.
Didn't cost me any more, I got a new tooth and the painkillers rocked for a good few days. |
I've had 2 root canals almost 10 years ago, complete successes, hardly any pain, the worst part being the annoyance of sitting in the chair for 3 hours. They capped both with some crowns, had them checked a few months ago, still going strong.

ROFL, Puesdo is having a hell of the time with his dentist work :)
|
only poor people get teeth pulled with nothing to replace them.
|
my advice?
your health is important. instead of spending money on beers, films, weed, cinema whatever u waste it on, go ahead and get the implant. I had an implant and it set me back 1,500 euros. next time i will fly back to england to get it done on the health service. p.s. that implant will last you for the rest of your life without a doubt. |
I have 2 with no issues and each cost a total including the crown about 600$
|
You're probably reading propaganda from a commercial dentists web page, am I right? They will ALWAYS steer you to the most expensive option, which would be an implant. It's a big scam. Just get the root canal. In the meantime, go buy some gly-oxide or a drug store equivalent. Rite aid has a product called Antiseptic mouth cleanser / oral pain relief that will help kill the infection.

I didn't enjoy the actual root canal I had, but I sure enjoyed the vicodin that they gave me afterwards!

How long a root canal / crown will last differs from person to person. Which tooth, the condition it's in, the state of your gum and bone health, genetic issues - everyone is different. The skill and technique of your dentist also matters greatly.
The general guideline is that it should last you about 10 years. I'm having a number of implants done to replace old root canals / crowns right now and let me fill you in on the stuff they don't tell you. 1. In almost every case, there will be a delay between extraction and implant being done. That delay can be anywhere from 6-12 months. There are "same day" solutions out there but they are the most expensive option, are extremely new and no one knows how well they will hold up vs. the conservative approach. We'll know in another 10 years or so how well they hold up and what the down side is from complications, infection, etc. 2. Do not delay or put off dealing w/ an infected tooth that needs a root canal. That infection will remove bone under the infected tooth which can make treatment options much more expensive or limited in which options can use. 3. There are less expensive options vs. tooth for tooth implant replacement. You can replace all your teeth with permanent dentures and "mini implants" for less than 5k w/ no insurance as an example. There are also more and more options for patients who have lost bone and do not have enough left to support "traditional" implants. While we'd all prefer to have the 50k implant option the ultimate determination will be made by what you can afford. The good news is there are lots of options so going around with missing teeth is not a necessity. It just sucks that for people in the US there really is no such thing as "dental insurance". They'll pay for a million dollars worth of healthcare but when it comes to your teeth your pretty much paying out of pocket no matter what. |
I enjoyed no longer wanting to claw my face off from the pain. What I didn't enjoy was not getting it properly filled right after and going through a series of four or five more procedures over the last year and nearly losing a tooth. That was my re-introduction to American health care too.

ok check this root canal story out. I had a root canal, but my mom took me to this place that was free because they were testing a new medication for pain. I grew up not poor but didn't have much. Basically it was ibuprofen and some amino acid combined. It didn't work at all and I was in a ton of pain in the waiting room as the nurses would administer the pills and ask me how I felt every 30 minutes. I get home, and find out my dad died from heart failure, then, the stitches fall out a few days later and the bone was exposed and they had to open me up further to clean that out. That was a pretty shitty week.
(cool story bro i know) duke |

The nerve died when I arrived because the pain stopped in the waiting room. the actual root canal was no big deal. The worst part is having your mouth stretched for 20 minutes. Now I know how Tori Black feels. |
Had 29 extractions all done at once 10 years ago.
The experience was...interesting. :eyecrazy |
I had one a couple months ago. Fell asleep in the chair, yay painkillers.
|
get the root canal and crown, you need it or you wont be able to chew on that side. a good crown will last 30 years. the procedure is awful, ain't gonna lie. i havent had one but sat chairside through many when i was younger and it's a very long, tedious procedure. make sure they give you the happy gas and get lots of pain killers for after and you will be fine.

So I just woke up (was up all night with the pain) dentist got me in emergency at 9:30AM and did an x-ray, said the tooth was bad and it wasn't worth saving, he yanked that fucker out and medicated me pretty good... I am eating apple sauce right now and gonna catch up on missed work.
I had bad experiences when I was little with dentists. Bad teeth runs in my family and I had every tooth in my mouth capped when I was 8 and went through so much pain that when I could make the decisions for myself, I refused to go to a dentist... Not the smartest idea, but I can't go back and time and fix it, just move forward. I'll get an implant later on down the road. |
I got a root canal a few years ago. The pain of the procedure itself wasn't really bad. The dentist was good and used a lot of Novocaine. I was sore for a few days after. However, three months later I still had issues with the tooth and I had pain off and on for another 6 months. Finally I ended up just having it pulled and getting a bridge/fake put in.
