And The Greatest Science Fiction Movie Of All Time Is...
http://www.copertinedvd.org/copertin...ade_runner.jpg
Runner Up: http://www.dvdexploder.com/Alien-front.jpg Honorable Mentions: The Thing 2001: A Space Odyssey Terminator 2 |
I don't like either of them, although I haven't seen Blad Runner since I was a little kid.
I think Star Wars should be up the top scifi movie. |
I prolly would not disagree.
I learned recently that the father of science fiction is actually a mother- mary shelley. I didn't know that Frankenstein was the of first science fiction. I would prolly have to have that in my top 5. |
Forbidden Planet, 1956, with Leslie Nielsen and Walter Pidgeon. Just amazing and holds up real well today.

many of the scenes in Blade Runner were filmed at a building a couple blocks from my studio here in downtown Los Angeles- the Bradburry building, it's spectacular!
|
Never seen Blade Runner, Always mean to but it never crops up on tv, suppose will have to drop the $$ on the dvd
|
Star Wars - 'A new hope' will always be my number 1 choice.
Followed by 'Aliens'... :) |
I agree wholeheartedly with the initial post.
|
Blade Runner is amazing but I would have placed Alien in #1.
|
Alien, Predator and zillion more to choose from

It is not about aliens or anything like that...it is a movie that predicts and shows you a future that is rapidly going more and more true with each passing year. Highly recommend you watch it tonight! :thumbsup |
Blade Runner's a top 20 for sure, but wouldn't be #1 for me. I'd have put Event Horizon in the list close to Blade Runner.
My top 5 would include Star Wars ep. IV (the first one that ever came out), War of the Worlds (the original), Serenity, The Matrix, Cocoon. Oldies on the list would include Angry Red Planet (1959), The Flying Saucer (1950), and 1973's animated classic Fantastic Planet. SW-Empire Strikes Back, Alien, Aliens, ST-The Wrath of Kahn, and The Day the Earth Stood Still all tend to Rank well on most top lists out there. Several titles are interchangeable as #1. |

all star wars movies are horrible childish movies, it's like they're made for kids. Alien is a brilliant movie, as well as Aliens.. deserves to be amongst the top. I remember i liked the style of Blade Runner but i only seen it once. Terminator 2 is one of my all time favourite movies, the thing is brilliant... the list is spot on. |

Human Clones? Nope. Flying Cars? Nope Off world colonies? Nope Genetic Manipulation to make little people as pets? Nope. Video Phone phone booths? Nope Blade Runner is excellent and one of my all time favourite Sci-fi's but none of its predictions have come true. Quote:
Holy shit! 2 More of my favourite all time movies. I've watched both of these movies 20 times easy. Love them both. |

1. total recall
2. the fifth element 3. blade runner :2 cents: :2 cents: |
The obvious ones already mentioned...I'd have to add 'Contact' among my top 5 faves (although they ruined the ending - Sagan's original ending in the novel was much better IMO).
|
The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Close Encounters of The Third Kind. Blade Runner has a great look to it and holds up visually today. But it's content doesn't deserve it's place as "greatest" sci-fi movie. I think you guys need to look past just the visuals on some of these movies you're rating as the "best" sci-fi ever. Total Recall 1990 hasn't aged that well visually for instance. It was always meant I think as a campy sci-fi movie. |
IMDB says:
Star Wars Episode V - The Emipre strikes back http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/reference from a cultural point of view I'd probably say 2001 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/reference and from a "this is so absurd, I can't believe it" point of view: Dark Star http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069945/reference |
Strange Days is a good over looked sci-fi.
|
First Star Wars, T2, Buckeroo Banzai all on my list. I liked Blade Runner, but it actually seems better watching it at a later age than it did when I first saw it.
|
Hard to tell but Alien and Star Wars are some awesome sci-fi movies.
|
I ran across Fifth Element on TV recently, and surprisingly - still watched it, and enjoyed it. Even though this must be the 100th time I've seen it. That's a good indicator of a good movie.
A solid one that wasn't named yet - Gattaca Nobody brought up Avatar yet? No way! :) |
Star Wars isn't even Science Fiction, it's fantasy like Lord of the Rings, etc. Just because it has space ships or aliens doesn't make it science fiction. At best it's a "space opera", but calling it one of the best Science Fiction movies of all-time is pretty silly. Then again, putting The Thing or Terminator 2 on such a list is equally as absurd.

I just love The Fifth Element - one movie I can watch again and again :)
|
Bland runner is the clear #1 but it's also fairly old.
In recent years the best by far is District 9 |
Everyone puts Blade Runner and 2001 at the top. There are so many other good films, such as:
THX1138 12 Monkeys The Terminator The Matrix Moon District 9 Fahrenheit 451 Dark City |
the 1st Matrix and although some will find this a contentious choice, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
|
Tough to rank them... I'd rather just point out a few faves.
