War in North Korea Inevitable?

"U.S. support for South Korea's defense is unequivocal, and the president has directed his military commanders to coordinate closely with their Republic of Korea counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression," a statement from the White House said.

Lee called it a "critical turning point" on the tense Korean peninsula, still technically in a state of war because the fighting ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

"We have always tolerated North Korea's brutality, time and again. We did so because we have always had a genuine longing for peace on the Korean peninsula," Lee said in a solemn speech to the nation from the halls of the country's War Memorial.

"But now things are different. North Korea will pay a price corresponding to its provocative acts," he said.

Possibly 4 simultaneous wars this year? This will end well...

David! 05-24-2010 09:01 AM

Sinking a war ship and killing 46 people is an act of war. In the past, wars were started for much less than that. But when you are dealing with a maniac that has access to nuclear weapons, you have to be careful. :2 cents:

Rochard 05-24-2010 09:01 AM

But haven't the two Koreas been at war now for the past sixty years? A peace treaty was never signed. Whatever. Let Norther Korea continue to rot.

Yeah the Vietnam War was started over a similar incident. It was in the Gulf of Tonkin. Google it... :2 cents:

Vietnam War: "The Tonkin incident", where American destroyer Maddox was supposedly attacked twice by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats in 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin never happened. What was happening at the time were aggressive South Vietnamese raids against the North in the same general area. Huge American presence wasn't decisive and President Nixon negotiated a "peace with honour" in 1973. This war was lost, when North Vietnam finally conquered South Vietnam in 1975.

I love remakes !

What if NK sunk Canada's ship. What would your attitude be?

Canadians soldiers are getting killed in Afghanistan, we went there in support of UN and US troops.

If a Canadian ship would be sunk I think we would deal with it with the support of the UN.

Amputate Your Head 05-24-2010 10:34 AM

I'm never an advocate of war, but it's high time someone did something about NK.

Thought we already had a cold war going on with NC anyway. The move of SK to cut off trade is just another step in attempting to convince the people ok NK to overthrow the government via starvation. But wait isn't china bankrolling them to begin with, and is it coincidence they both have nukes and are both communist countries.

Im just saying . . .

What proof is there that N.K. has sunk the S.K. ship ? Reports from the samke people that produced the fable of the WMD ?
With satellites that can check the herpes of Al-Quaeda operatives 24/7, wouldn`t you think that a N.K. ship in the vicinity of the S.K. ship would be recorded?

As for Canada, our military ships would not be in those waters, unless mandated by the U.N.

But, knock yourselves out.. you have always been good at attacking powerless countries ... but do not complain later on if people try to blow shit up in your country.

Not sure what Afghanistan has to do with North Korea. Perhaps you can elaborate.

All wars are "evitable"

_Richard_ 05-24-2010 11:01 AM

but, to answer your question, i'd be curious on why they'd attack us in the first place, unless it was some hypothetical situation of the UN mandated our warships there for whatever reason the chinese couldn't handle themselves

Zango 05-24-2010 11:03 AM

After World War II, Korea became divided into two countries: North Korea and South Korea.

You might want to get the facts straight before you pass judgment. An International report concluded a NK sub torpedoed the SK ship. Parts of the Torpedo were found on the ocean floor.

Canada wouldn't have warships out there "teasing" them - the U.S. does this all the time. Look at Iran.

Not referring to anything specific. Just making a point that wars have started because of events such as the SK's ship being sunk. WW1 for example started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand...

this is different, it's a surprise attack and i believe i heard some rumours that the torpedo used was experimental in nature

Fucking South Koreans need to start PAYING us for protecting their stupid little country.

The Cold War is over, and if the Communists take over the peninsula it doesn't really matter.

interesting story behind that, u.s. probably wouldn't have been involved in ww1 if the italians didn't blockade the new york harbor years before.

at that time in new orleans a group of italians were lynched, hung from the police courtyard by an angry irish mob because they were accused of killing the irish chief of police at the time. they were about to be let go because of lack of evidence when the mob stormed in and killed them.

italy's immediate response was to send their warships to the new york harbor to block it and threaten new york with destruction if they fucked with any more italians.

it was shortly after that the u.s. created "the great white fleet" to have a presence on the seas, because before that time they didn't have squat.

It does to the South Koreans.

Anyway I think that most of you are missing the point, the Korean War (which still hasn't ended) is a proxy war between the US and China.

Neither side will back down and neither side will take the first step.

It would be insane for the North to attack the South and even worse for the US to start a war with a nuclear state.

The best hope is China uses it's power to tame North Korea through financial aid.

On a last note, the North is in a bad spot financially. The need aid from the west to keep the regime going.

Also don't insult me by calling this wacky authoritarian state communist, you clearly haven't a clue what a communism is.

The US got into WW1 after the sinking of the Lusitania. The US wanted to enter the war but needed an excuse. Germany already won the war, so the Jews then went behind Germanys back and promised Britain to get the US into the war, if the brits would sign the Balfour Declaration and promise them Palestine. The US then sent the Lusitania into german waters and it was supposedly sunk. The germans even put ads in Newspapers warning people not to sail on the ship cause they knew they were getting set up. The US then proceeded to kick ass.
