I'm considering rejoining the military

I'm bored. I've changed careers several times, and gone from dead broke to okay, from okay to well, from well to burning money, back to dead broke, back to okay.... just tired of it. Also tired of watching the world go by on CNN. I need more than planning out next season's Christmas light layout for the house, or how much potato salad to make for the next Easter family gathering.... domestic suburban middle-class life is fucking torture. And the very thought of starting some lame hobby like carving birdhouses or something, just to stay busy has prevented me from ever doing so. Closest thing I have to a "hobby" is probably sharpening knives.

Any reason I shouldn't strap on the armor again and head for hostile ground? (aside from you know, potential death.) :helpme

jimmy-3-way 06-25-2010 11:49 AM

Potential death is the major part of the fun.

leedsfan 06-25-2010 11:52 AM

I recommend you hone your sharp shooting skills and don your ghillie suit and hang out on top of your local Wal-Mart culling a few overweight dullards. You'll be doing your country a great service and making good use of your skills.

martinsc 06-25-2010 11:54 AM

how about some extreme sports instead?

Yeah, I believe I'm pushing close to the end of my age window.

Doesn't get more extreme than hunting Taliban in Afghan.

What was your MOS?

I'm glad you didn't mention patriotism as a reason.

IllTestYourGirls 06-25-2010 12:00 PM

Sounds like a good idea.

Nope. Has nothing to do with patriotism. Just another gun for hire.

cardinalvices 06-25-2010 12:02 PM

aren't you too old for this?

Not yet. I'm past the age limit for new recruits, but my prior service gives me extra years. :)

So much boredom can make you start killing birds.

Why not apply to Blackwater and make some decent coin?

It is a sin to kill a mockingbird. As told in the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck from an American novel of the same name.

I considered a couple of different mercenary companies like that... the money is definitely better. Have a family member that's signed on with one of them. But... I don't know, can you ever really trust any of those guys? Aren't half of Blackwater's execs indicted for murder right now?

Good question here.

Just get kids, you won't have free time anymore.

My kids are already grown. One of them is a veteran too.

BestXXXPorn 06-25-2010 12:09 PM

With a world of options before you, I'd probably NOT opt for rejoining ... There's so much shit out there to do... I mean, you work remote out of your place right? not in an office?

That frees you up to travel wherever you want at any time. That's a LOT of options :D

Redrob 06-25-2010 12:09 PM

The military need people with good communications and cyber-security skills. If you are good enough and have the required educational background, you can probably get yourself a commission and work in a PR, communications or security related organization.

(smelling a little fishy dude, no offense)

serving our country is one of the best things a man can do, & thank you for your service in the past.

i just wonder if they would take you back since GFY is actually a covert government web site used for surveilence of the adult industry & to send secret codes abroad (fatfoo). Your writings on the benefits of the happy plant might not go over well in Langley.

Can't get a commission without a 4 year degree at least.

Yeah, but look at it this way: their priority is covering their own asses to keep making coin. You join up and your ass goes under that umbrella.

Look at some of the crazy shit those guys pulled in Afghan - a dude checked out a truckload of AK's and signed them out as Cartman. Don't do stupid shit like that, don't get yourself killed and you get the action and the honey, thoughtfully direct deposited in your checking account back home.

I say go for it, but I think there is an age recruitment limit right now (42 y/o for Army, younger for others). I have thought about it as well, but I make too much money to just up and leave for the service. If I were you I would maybe dedicate a hobby to helping the wounded veterans, make them a website, donate your time to them somehow.

Another thing you can do is take up a sport hobby like Muay Thai, Jiujitsu etc. Will help keep you in shape and get out that agression.

cardinalvices 06-25-2010 12:12 PM

How about finding a hobby, doing the worldround trip or something. If you are fed up with your life maybe you should change it? Live in southern France for a couple of months

mayabong 06-25-2010 12:13 PM

Anyone dumb enough to believe the mainstream media and think that somehow fighting in the middle east is protecting our freedoms at home, maybe deserves to get blown up. (natural selection)

Yeah, there is. But most people don't know what any of that stuff means or how it works. I was a 63B, which is part of Ordnance, (Ordance bomb insignia on my uniform and such), but the specific job I was in was Truck Mechanic. When we went to war, it became Recovery Specialist and Bomb Squad. My 63B primary job didn't exist any more because there were no shops or parts. So we did our secondary jobs.

But it doesn't matter really. I wouldn't go back in to that. Too many other options. :)

They probably called it E.O.D. - Explosive Ordinance Division, thats what they call it in the Army. I don't know the MOS # for it. I was a 91B when I was in, which is a Combat Medic, they changed the identifier I believe to 91H or something last I heard. Not sure though, its been 17 years since I was in.

Zuzana Designs 06-25-2010 12:15 PM

I did my time in the army as an MP. If it's your thing I say do it! I know it was not mine but it taught me things in life I could never learn anywhere else.

Fair enough... I was just checking. Everybody in the army calls it EOD. Personally I was a 13B, then went to 13E during desert storm. (Howitzer crew, and then Artillery forward observer)

.

There you go hahaha, I wasn't EOD but I did work with them. I forgot it was Disposal, been a long time. I used to have to stand by all the time when the EOD guys would do detonations in case they got hurt. They would go in after a missile test, mark the bomblets, then detonate them while I sat in a small shack in the desert in 115 degree heat with no a/c or television. Boring as fuck. Thanks for clarifying the name.

Or everyone who's seen Hurt Locker 5x (like me.)

When I first enlisted, I was supposed to be a 13F which they said was forward observer (if I remember correctly). Was supposed to be a Cohort assignment, which meant the people I went to Basic with, I went to AIT with, then we would all be stationed at Hawaii for at least 1 year. I wound up getting sick (Mono LOL) and I missed my deployment date, so they had me reclassify, and I chose 91B (Medic). I am glad I did, because I hated 90% of the fuckers I went to basic/ait with. I couldn't imagine being stationed with them as well. The job sounded like fun though, always thought about how my life would be diff if I did it. Maybe I would have stayed in the service longer.
