Wordpress membership site questions

I'm putting together a basic membership paysite and am leaning towards using Wordpress since I already know it pretty well. I don't have enough content or potential for huge profits to justify going with a CMS made just for porn. I want to keep startup costs to the bare minimum.

From reading posts here and on the web it appears that one way to do this would be to make two Wordpress sites, one for the free tour and the other for members on a "members.domain.com" subdomain. This way the payment processor handles clearing valid members to the member site.

I know WooCommerce and AMember might be an option, but both of those cost $$ and like I said I really want to spend as little as possible with this experiment.

So I guess my question is about doing the two Wordpress site idea for the tour and members. Is this common practice for people who use Wordpress for paysites?

Any other suggestions or ideas I should consider?

WooCommerce is for free - unless something has changed during this second.
The problem is not WooCommerce or any other plugin but who handles your payments?

You could make the pay members a part of a group and give them access and process payments only for that group all on one site.

I found that I had more issues than it was worth, there were issues with mobile devices playing videos behind the .htpasswd field with the wordpress plugins. Also it's a real pain in the ass to update 2 sites all the time.

If your just starting out, might be better to build up on the clip stores where you don't have to worry about a CMS for now.

Are you shooting your own content, or buying non-exclusive ?? If your not shooting your own stuff you might not want to waste your time!

just my

It might be, but that was what he was talking about doing, by letting ccbill handle the member management they do so with .htpasswd/.htaccess

Actually I was not tied to CCBill, was actually looking more at the Verotel Bill With Bill program to avoid that Visa/MC start-up fee.

Some of the content I got was purchased and they don't allow clip store use.

WooCommerce is for free
The basic Woo is free but their Membership and Subscription add-ons cost $$$.

Yeah, I was thinking about this but that's why I was wondering what others do with Wordpress. I guess with Woo I can do one site and restrict access to content on a case by case basis, but doing two sites and blocking all access to everyone but members on one site seems a little more secure. I guess I'll need to decide about a time vs cost decision.
