the flight MH17 of july 15th had 3 cruise altitudes after taking off from Amsterdam, it climbed to 33 000 feet and maintained that altitude till it was leaving Azerbaijan airspace then it climbed to 35 000 feet and just 2,5 hours before landing it climbed again to 37 000 feet.


For your info controllers can assign a flight track/route but pilots may or not agree with it so Malaysian pilots could have refused flying that track.
