I'll settle for the new 1 series m coupe. But out of these 2 I'd go with the Audi just because less people own them and AWD is fun.

i like the rs5 MUCH more than the m. the reviews i've read about the rs5 though all include quite a scathing bit re: audi's choice of where they put that engine- way out front.

i already read like 10 articles about it

and it looks like they are going to build a series of 300-500 pieces - for about $250k each

but i rather have the original to be honest:

2.1l turbo - 5 cylinder - 306 hp - not bad for 1984

a used one is like $150k - $200k - if you find one - cause they only built like 200 of them

The thing that I've never quite understood about auto journalism is their obsession with comparing cars on the basis of outright performance. It would make sense if you're in the business of driving cars in head-to-head driving competitions, but the bottom line is this: Once you start breaking 5 second 0-60 times, and are in the neighborhood of 12 second 1/4 mile times, comparing vehicles on the basis of acceleration and power pretty much become a moot point.

In the year that I've driven a BMW 335i, not once have I come across a vehicle that out-accelerated me, or out-handled me. The car can accelerate so quickly, and handles so extremely well, it's almost silly to think about vehicles such as the Ferrari 458 or the 911 Turbo.

If anyone has any intention of driving these vehicles at anywhere near their performance potential, you absolutely must be committed to either getting a hugely expensive speeding ticket... or more likely, arrested. And you can get arrested just as easily driving the Porsche Cayman S, Audi S4, or BMW 335i.

No need to spend twice as much to get in the same amount of trouble. ;)

Now, if you were to ask me what a more fair basis of comparison would be... I'd have to say quality of craftsmanship. In which case it's Porsche hands down for every aspect including performance, handling, build quality, and quality of materials. But strangely enough, auto journalists rarely mention those other more important and more practical points of comparison.

Beat a few 335i's in a 300C SRT8. As well as lost races to faster stock or modified cars.. might be where you live..

listen to this, this is better than sex

still only 5 cylinder and 2.1l - but about 600-700hp and 0-60mph in 3 sec (on gravel). shortly after ralley group b cars were forbidden cause it got too dangerous. but that's why at least over here the word "Quattro" still gives people like me goose bumps

sounds good. that blow off valve whine would get annoying after a while though.

no one needs more than 4 cylinders anyways - my Porsche also only has 4 - but with 3l and 240hp

i make an exception for Audi 5 cylinder engines though - just for the sound

(which btw the new Quattro from your pics will have too - 5 cylinder, 408hp)

no way! 8 cylinders has been mathematically proven to be the correct #.

I'm a fan of high performance vehicles, and it's always been a fascination of mine to own a 911 Turbo, but in all honesty I can really freak myself out going 140mph on the freeway with the 335i, and the acceleration is quite impressive too.

I've grown increasingly frustrated with the level of congestion on the roadways, and how the majority of drivers insist on being in the fast lane while refusing to move right for faster traffic. I just don't see a way to drive faster than I already do, while being able to utilize the performance capabilities.

The only way I can get to really experience the car is to leave the Bay Area at 3:00am. It seems like that time is the only time people will actually acknowledge your intention to pass, and it's usually when you're coming up from behind at 120+. Even then, a lot of inconsiderate drivers simply won't move over even when the freeway is mostly empty.

What I find ironic is my ability to drive faster in the slow lane than I could possibly drive in the fast lane.

I wish the Highway Patrol would actually enforce the lane courtesy laws currently on the books that say slow traffic must move right. Seems like they gladly enforce speed, but can't be bothered with asking people to please stay out of the left lanes unless passing. All of this in the face of freeway expansion, adding lanes to allow for more traffic, etc. They could EASILY increase the capacity of the roadway if they started heavily fining people for not allowing others to pass, all while bringing in much needed revenue for the state.

Not only will it allow traffic to move more efficiently, but enforcement of lane courtesy will also vehicles to use less fuel. Less hammering the throttle to get around someone. Less aggressive driving. Less road rage.

If this country is all gung-ho on the Green Initiative, seems like this would be an obvious place to begin.

A mechanical engineer once told me that the flat 6 architecture is the only layout that has perfectly opposing forces that prevent the engine from wearing itself out. Basically flat 6's are the "perfect engine" design.

imo, the fast lane should be members only. you take a course, pass a test and pay a monthly subscription fee to access it.

you could be right, i think i read an article somewhere/sometime that stated a v8 is the proper # of cylinders, but i can't recall where i got that.

Doesn't the new Mustang Boss beat the M3? And that thing is a foot of the ground with a live rear axle.

The mustang and the m3 had a side by side track and performance comparison, they were really close.

But to compare the vehicles as daily drivers overall. They're arent even in the same league.

that video is retarded

they put the M3 behind and all the guy could really do is tailgate the Audi otherwise he'd just ram into him.

watch the Topgear BMW tests against Mercedes and Audi.
BMW kicks ass.

besides, there is much more to a car than how "quick it is"
Audi is shit quality.

Beemers are everywhere. Seems like every 19 year old kid in Southern California owns one (or more accurately, leasing one).

Audi is more sophisticated IMHO.

You'll probably be in the shop a fair amount for both cars. but Beemers are notorious for breaking down and requiring shop duty.

I'm happy with my E63 AMG (though I'm yearning for a 911 Turbo...). 500HP for a 4 door sedan FTW!

It is causing me to want to do a 15" brake set up just to stop like the sportier BMW's do, stock.

Super nice cars though, I love everything about BMW's except the red dials and gauges, I think it looks tacky as fuck

There are a few newer motors that still sound "right" when talking about the V8's. Although Chevy and Dodge are the only two car companies that I'm aware of that still make single cam engines. The Ford 2 and 4 cam motors sound okay stock, but they have a really weird lope with bigger cams.

The motor in my Camaro is only 5 years old, only 364ci and only has 1 cam and makes more power than 95% of the old big block cars with stock motors. Has a more aggressive idle too lol.

I would still have a BBC in my car if I could shoehorn one in. Unfortunately even small block carb'd motors don't fit without cutting shit, of which I am not a fan.

yeah, already have a Cadillac and don't want either. weird, I've never even done a test drive on any German cars. not sure why that is, some pretty nice looking cars... I have a friend with the Audi a8, it's a great car. just seem to wind up with Cadillacs for some reason. love the BMW 7 series as well but I'll most likely get the new caddy xts

as a guy that drives the mountain roads on a regular basis my experience with BMW is they are bought and driven by pussies. I have never seen a BMW driven hard on the road... ever... I've even run down a guy in a 3 series with my Cadillac DTS, I ate the guys fucking lunch in a luxury sedan. I did have to get a break job right after though ;)

the guys that really haul ass for some reason are the Volvo guys... watch out for those guys and the guys in mini trucks too.... never see Audi or Mercedes on the roads up there either. I have given series thought to the Porch Sedan though. very ugly to me but not very expensive and pretty comfortable as well as fast.... like 20K down and the lease would be $300 a month for 2 years, and in 2 years there is gonna be a glut on the market of those cars as well

the thing is no bottom end on a moter that has to wind up like a cheap watch before it gets any power. once you start driving a motor that pulls like a mule from 1K doubt you'll wanna go back to needing to hit 2.5-3K on the tack to back out of the driveway.

I could drive all day in the vetter and never go higher than 1.8k if I didn't want too and nowone would ever be trying to pass me because I was slowing traffic down. then when I would drop the hammer the vette would go sideways down the road for a block, the cts churps the tires in 4th gear

yeah the 3 series looks pretty good, just never wanted one. I love muscle cars. not much you can do about that.... the Germans will never make a muscle car either.

Great cars, i like both.

Still, I don't like the way they compare those cars. It's obvious that the M3 is a bit harder to drive. It's a rear wheel drive whereas the Audi is a 4WD.
It's like comparing apples and oranges.

They will both break down on a regular basis. The reliability of both Audis and BMWs is truly shocking these days. Mercedes are just the same. Better just to dream about them than have the reality of owning them.

RS5 hands down, Audi has been kicking BMW's ass in the style department for years. Since 99% of people will never track their cars I don't see why people buy Bimmers anymore. No value for money what so ever!
