I love how Canadians get all riled up for junior hockey
http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey...o-buffalo?bn=1
Nobody else in the world cares. I recall being in Toronto one cold week a few years ago in January and not being able to find NFL playoffs on at any so-called sports bar. If they had 100 TVs, every one of them was tuned to junior hockey. I felt like I was in a scene of 'Deliverance', surrounded by semi-retarded, aggressive hillbillies. I guess it gives Canadians something to be proud about when all their professional sports teams (nevermind the country itself) are failures? |

I'm Canadian, but even I admit that Canada is an epic fail, particularly when it comes to sports. I did something about it however and moved far away a long time ago. I just feel sorry for the redneck Canadians that worship the junior hockey championship that nobody else notices or even cares about.

Really Glen? I'm going back a few years as the last time I was in Canada, but I recall specifically going to three different sports bars in the Etobicoke area, Jack Astors on Queensway was one of them, and none of them had NFL playoffs on when I walked in. Jack Astors refused to put it on one of their 100 TVs and the other two bars, which are called Brickyard and Californias offered to put it on in the corner somewhere without sound. I have to admit it was quite the scene, since I didn't even know there was such a thing as junior hockey championships until stumbling into these bars. Like I said, it gives Canadians something to be proud about since you fail at the professional sports level.

I know of places in Texas where they postpone Halloween if it falls on a Friday because the local football teams are playing.
I don't think it's much different. Fans of the sports take pride in the up and coming athletes and just truly love the game.

I suppose Olympics don't matter - but where do you suppose NHL players come from? I am proud that as Canadian's we care about what our kids are doing and give them the support along with their parents in all the efforts given to young players. That we're balanced in what we care about - I've walked into many bars up here where NFL is on - basketball - soccer etc. and everyone had a good time. Feel free to move to USA where you can be proud of whatever sport YOU feel is important vs. not important.

People like to support their local minor league teams. I like going to a mudhens game over an Indians or Tigers game. Friday nights are high school football nights during the fall,
Seeing how popular hockey is over there doesn't surprise me that jr hockey is popular too

Uh, lots of people in the U.S. care about junior hockey. The IHL (a minors league) and the IIHF (the league you are referring to), are very important to those of us who pay attention to hockey. A lot of the players we have are invited or do actually play in some of these tournaments.
In other words, it's important to those who like hockey. Canada has quite a few people who like hockey, but they aren't the only ones.

World Juniors and NFL playoffs have not coincided in terms of their schedules since the 2000-2001 NFL playoffs....
So it was more than a few years ago..if indeed this ever happened. Call people rednecks, classify them because you dont like something, and be as big of a troll as you want... But the fact is that there is NOTHING wrong with a nation cheering on and supporting KIDS that are doing what they love to do. Maybe other countries could learn something by stepping up and supporting their youth in tournaments such as this. |

well you're right that the World Junior tournament is only huge in one country - Canada. that's why starting next year the WJC will be in Canada every other year and in off years in the US often - Europeans don't support it that much. hardcore hockey fans in other hockey countries tune in too because every future superstar plays in it. last year's final between the US and Canada was one of the greatest hockey games every played.

The only English league team to up sticks and go to a new town almost went bankrupt by doing so and the supporters went en-masse to follow an absolute minnow team.

so something is only good if other countries care about it? now that is stupid, why are people on here always so worried about what others enjoy. Basically you are saying people should only enjoy what the majority of the worlds population enjoy...what a sad world that would be

T.O. and Ochocinco seem to agree that hockey is the toughest sport in the world.
Fact is, I'm pretty sure if you add them up the "redneck" american football fans outnumber the "redneck" Canadian hockey fans by a large margin. Sounds like you just felt like stirring up a useless debate today
