If those apps are all you need to do your job then great. Most of my daily duties involve a lot more than a browser, chat and ghetto office suite - and openoffice/libreoffice are ghetto. Linux is a neat toy but it isn't good for anyone who has real work to do. It's the best server platform on the planet though.

Avoid Ubuntu btw. Canonical is greedy as shit. They've taken something meant to be free and shared and done their very best to commercialize it. You can't even find the word "Linux" on ubuntu.com without some serious digging.

They've dumped the standard window manager (Gnome) for their own piece of shit (Unity). The best newbie distro available is Linux Mint. From what I have heard they are forking Gnome 2 and will continue to develop and use it. Fedora 14 is great too. Fedora 15 uses Gnome 3 by default. Not sure if I like it yet but it's better than Unity.

Also consider Debian. All of the *buntu distros are derived from Debian.

I shouldn't talk shit on Linux desktops. Sometimes I boot into Linux to code just to eliminate some distractions. I can't edit video, use photoshop, illustrator, or play decent games. What I can do is open vim and code my ass off.

I hate Microsoft office even when I pay for it. libre is okay..

openoffice is for sure not bad if you ask me

what APPS would you need to WORK besides skype, irc, web, etc?

I don't use IMs or skype for work at all. I stick to email so I can respond at my leisure. I need premiere, after effects, photoshop, at least. I like to use dreamweaver but I don't need it. As far as coding goes, I prefer a good IDE for that as well but vim or geanie in linux is good enough.

Then there is a shitload of smaller, independent, windows only apps that I have found over the years that I can't imagine living without. They aren't necessary but they make my job easier.

Yes, 10.04 LTS and it is fine.

If you really need to run windows apps try and see how they will run under WINE. Install the latest version if you don't have it.
Code:
  #sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
  #sudo apt-get update
  #sudo apt-get install wine1.3
or use Synaptic if you need a GUI

Don't forget to set the permissions in the windows installers or programs to executable

It's buggy and bloated. Back when it was staroffice it had the right idea. Unfortunately oracle took it over and trashed it. Oracle dumped it recently so keep your eyes on libreoffice for some real development progress. I think within a year or so it will be a respectable office suite.

there is no "standard" window manager on unix. That's the beauty of it. Gnome and KDE are the more popular ones, but there's also enlightenment, flux, afterstep, etc etc etc.

I'm not talking about unix. I'm talking specifically about Ubuntu Linux. As far as I know Ubuntu has always used Gnome by default. Sure, you can install any window manager you want but linux newbies don't generally do that.

KDE hasn't been popular since KDE 3. It's almost dead. I know one person who uses a KDE desktop because he likes the stupid little desktop widgets. Everyone I know who uses linux on the desktop is using Gnome, XFCE or Openbox. Once more distros pick up Gnome 3 I think XFCE is going to explode in popularity.
