I just got done watching the first few episodes of Treme. Now THAT is a good show. I know it's not new and the theme is totally different, but that is a real show shot and written by professionals.

I'm a big fan of The Wire, but Treme wasn't doing it for me. I'll probably watch it once its run is done, and its on DVD.

I realize that Game of Thrones isn't David Simon material, but its still a good show, and it delivers in different ways. You should give it a chance. How many episodes (or minutes) did you actually watch?

If you only watched the pilot, then bail from the discussion of whether or not its a quality show.

I watched the first 15 minute premier and thought the show was going to rock. Then I saw the first episode and it really bored the shit out of me. Then I saw the second and third episodes and they turned me off even more.

It seems very trite and stereotypical. LOTRs came out almost a decade ago and it managed to look a lot more real than this. I mean the effects and scenery aren't even that good. All the actors look like they just stepped out of the beauty salon, and they are supposed to be living in a time that resembles the Middle Ages. Remember how the actors in Deadwood looked? Fucking filthy, because that's how people looked like in those days. Yeah it's a fantasy, I get it, but still, doesn't feel real at all.

Some characters are totally mis-casted IMO... like the blonde girl who gets fucked by the 8 foot giant in one of the first episodes... she looks like a cheap hooker not the kind of character you would find in a fantasy medieval story.

The dialogues seem forced and dumb. Those things ruin a show or movie for me. And to top it off you have the nudity and softcore porn type sex that seems to be thrown in randomly just to prove this is a truly "grown-up show" and of course so you won't change the channel. I hate that shit. Maybe I'll pick up one of the books, but I doubt it.

Great show IMO. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though. And to be fair Game of Thrones takes place in it's own world. So if you're going into this with expectations of what it SHOULD look like (comparing it to Deadwood and LOTR) then of course you're going to be disappointed.

If you watch some of the production reels You'll see that the set designers have gone to great lengths to avoid the looks of the Middle Ages. You either accept what you see on the screen or you don't.

So what do you watch on Sunday nights? I need something for my gf to watch so she can get off my back when Game of Thrones is on and it seems like you too have similar tastes in television.

Game of thrones is awesome.
The fact that it doesn't appeal to LOTR fans is probably because there is no elf skating on a shield and shooting 100 arrows per sec.

I thought Mildred Pierce was excellent. I don't know if it's on now where you live. I also posted Treme was very good.

LOTR is a masterpiece, the movie and especially the book. I wouldn't compare either because although I didn't read Game of Thrones I'm willing to bet my soul it's not on the same level.

The comparison I made was in the quality of CGS and scenery.

Every time an episode finishes I feel irritated and want there to be more! I don't like that they're not really involving the direwolves as much as they should, but hopefully that will change.

Different strokes for different folks. The millions who tune in every week obviously enjoy watching it

You should Moe. The books delve deeper into what imho sold the series into becoming a tv mini series, but fails to convey on the small screen. You won't be disappointed.

For an HBO mini-series production, it's damn good. As a fan of the books, I have my quibbles with some of the adaptation - but overall they've done a remarkable job. I thought the weakest scenes so far involved the Tournament. First, the City Guard captain begs for help due to the massive influx of people. Next we cut to the Tournament, and it looks like there were a few hundred people watching max. The Cal Drogo stuff comes across a bit weak as well.

The second book has over 1,200 pages and contains epic battles. That will be a challenge on HBO's budget (they're not New Line Cinema). I've heard they may break it out into 2 seasons.

OK I just watched the fourth episode and I still can't get into it, so it's not like I'm not even trying. I don't care about the characters (too many) and really don't understand what's going. I mean I REALLY HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE. Something about the winter coming and a wall and Others. I literally cringe every time the midget opens his mouth. WTF is he supposed to be some kind of bad ass? I guess it simply doesn't impress me. I'm coming across as a snob, I guess I am.

It's funny to see how people will down vote the negative reviews as "not helpful." Why do people get so personally offended when you don't like their favorite thing? I thought my best friend's husband would never speak to me again when I called his favorite movie "kinda cheesy."

Now you're just starting to sound like a close-minded hater. Trust me, you're not the genius minority who is seeing something that the rest of us dumb mouth-breathers aren't seeing. There's a consensus that the show is good, so that makes you the asshole.

From what it sounds like, you're not even paying attention to one damn thing that's going on. It's not complicated to follow at all, if you actually listen to what characters are saying and half stay awake. I really think you have some kind of bias against the shopw before you even started. It's not like you have to like it, but you have some of the most retarded criticism. You shouldn't even bother because you just sound like an idiot now....

I'm giving my opinion, you can think whatever you want. It's not the first time I thought largely appreciated movies or shows sucked. Don't take it personal.

I said in another post that I saw the 15 minute premier and thought it was going to kick ass.

Game of Thrones is what I call a slow burn story. It is taking its time and slowly building up to the action. I haven't read the books so I don't know what is coming, but I am enjoying the suspense and how things are slowly coming to a boil.

It is hard to compare it to LOTR for a lot of reasons, but one of the main ones is that they don't have 300 million dollars to make this so they have to cut some corners somewhere.

For me the story is like putting together pieces of a puzzle so I can see how some people may not like that and could have trouble getting into it.

My only qualm with "Thrones" is at times I do feel like I better read the books to figure out what is going on because the dialog involves discussions of things that are presented as almost random asides about deep histories of things that haven't been established in any way, (kind of like that crazy voice over narration recounting 25% of the plot in the space of a minute or so in the movie version of "Dune")the back stories are rich and hard to keep up with as a result, like names of people or events that obviously will have great bearing on future actions, so I find myself asking someone that has read the books tons of questions. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing because it does seem to unfold more and more of those plot details through on screen action.

I sometimes feel the same. I have been wanting to read the books for a while, but I want to make sure he actually finishes the series before I start it. When he releases the last book in the series I will start reading it for sure.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing because it does seem to unfold more and more of those plot details through on screen action.
The first book, if I remember correctly, doesn't go into deep background info either.. All that sort of stuff dribbles out over time.. Keeps you wanting to read more...

I think one of the problems some people have with the show is all the sub plot intrigues that are going on.. All of it comes out slowly over time.

The scene where Starks son gets thrown out the tower window by the queens brother cause he saw them fucking may have seemed a bit overblown, the sex part just for "shock"... But given this last episode, a bunch of things should have fallen into place for people... i.e. why the murdered Hand was tracking down all the Kings bastards, reading thru the book of ancestry, and of course why he was murdered.

Good luck with that... He's notorious for taking forever to get the next book out.

Yeah that seems to be the case. I remember him posting on his website about a year ago that he was almost done with book five which at the time he thought would be the last one. Then a few months later he posted that it was around 3,000 pages long so he was splitting it into two books. Now many months later five is about to come out and supposedly he will be writing two more to finish the series off. HBO has said that they would love to do all the books in the series so maybe this will light a fire under him.

Still, I would rather wait and have them be good then have them rushed, I just worry that he will never finish it like that Robert Jordan guy.

I didn't check before I started the series, and talk about being pissed when I found out it wasn't done. I re read the whole series last month, so I'm back up to speed when the new novel comes out.

There is a lot being left out from the book to the mini series. While still good, the books as always, are better.

A friend of mine was the same way. He got the first book, loved it, got the second book and couldn't stop raving about it. So I check amazon to see how many there would be. He, like you finished the four that were out and assumed the fifth (which he thought would be the last) would be out soon. Three years later it comes out and we find out there will be at least one more and maybe two. He is re-reading it all now because it is so complex from what I hear that you need to get a refresher.

I bet that was the selling point for the mini series, the twists and turns of every plot, and sub plot. Unfortunately, the nuances of the book does not translate fully to the small screen. I mean Rob is 16, John is 15, the dire wolves being left out, and so many other things, small but important. I'm looking forward to the big battles, to see how they bring it to life. Tyrion on the other hand, is perfect due to the actor.
