After looking at the numbers from my "Twitter traffic" based campaigns last fall, I can't say I'm totally shocked at these early numbers, but they do seem a bit lower.

My experience with Twitter

Porn Star Gifts - Launched on 11/1
I'm the one who first experimented with the concept. My reasoning was simply that, by adding the Amazon wish lists, the girls would be more inclined to re-tweet. I was correct, as the re-tweet rate was higher than average, but it led to 0 conversions after getting something like 20 retweets by girls who had a total of 300-400K followers. Along with the the wish lists, each post had one photo gallery, a VOD link, and a few of their wish list items highlighted alongside my commentary. Total waste of time which is why I thought it was kind of funny when the idea was copied.

Débutant Of The Year Tournament - Launched Late November
A March Madness/World Cup bracket style tournament which started with 32 porn stars and ended with one champion (Lily Carter). The idea was that most of the girls would repeatedly lobby for votes. I did see a jump in traffic, and got some decent linkbacks and publicity, but it had a minimal effect on sales.

The only time it's been successful for me was when I launched my site and it was total luck. Really just the perfect storm. I launched in conjunction with the end of the World Cup because I was doing The World Cup of Porn. It was an unmonetized wordpress.com website that was really just meant to be a lead in to the launch. During the WCOP, I was able to get several guest posts from various porn stars, one of which was from Bobbi Eden. When she did the Team BJ thing and got all of those new followers, she had them vote for her on my website. As the Cup ended and I launched the site (which was initially selling an $8 porn star database loaded with affiliate coded links), I was able to make some quick money. The backend of the plan didn't workout as planned, but I did OK that first few weeks.

With that being said, it's highly unlikely that anything like that would ever happen again.It would come off as a cheap imitation. lol

Not to mention that a large part of the reason it worked for her so well is b/c she's Dutch and the Dutch have a history of disappointing results at the WC.

now that social signals are part of the google algo now any seo at the very least should have a large twitter account so you can tweet you links (or pay people to tweet them).

tweets and retweets from those with more followers/influence have more juice btw.

That's exactly how I feel. Yes, it can in theory be useful, but you need to really keep at it. Relative to writing keyword rich text, or working on some other type of promotion, or even submitting galleries, it does not fare well.

That's exactly why I'm doing it again. Not only that, but each of the posts which I hope to get retweeted will contain keyword rich internal links, a very important part of my SEO strategy. Check it out.

Thanks! I've actually spent the better part of this year trying to take a step back and learn the basics. Both for running a website and learning more about the industry itself (I came from a Media Planning/Negotiating background and had never even had a website of any kind beforehand) because I think that I kind of jumped the gun on a lot of ideas without having enough experience to maximize the results. Now that I feel as if I've somewhat developed a 'base' of knowledge and experience, though, I'm getting the itch to try some more outside the box type strategies.

Twitter is a great tool if you take the time to learn how to use it properly. It's been not only top 3 for traffic for us, but also actual conversions / sales. It takes time and patience to build it up, but its worth it.

I don't think there's an issue of learning how to use it properly. It's a very simple tool. I know for a fact that I haven't been using it the way it was meant to be used. However, once my tweet goes out and gets retweeted, it means that I am no longer part of the equation and that my links will hopefully be circulated by people who are using it properly. But they're not using it properly. Many user aren't using it properly. And as the user base continues to grow, there will likely be more and more people who don't use it properly and more people who just decide to do other things. Twitter has jumped the shark.

You do have a valid point, but my updated total of 92 uniques generated from retweets by girls with 59,785 followers, amounts to 0.15% click through, which is not only absurdly low,but much less in not only the %, which is to be expected with growth, but less in actual numbers than what it was during both last summer and during the holiday season.
It's an admittedly small sample ,and maybe Father's Day weekend has something to do with it, but it really is low.

Here are the updated numbers.

I just saw a 'press release' about how Nikki Benz celebrated her 100,000th Twitter follower by doing something or another. That's about twice as many as she had on 10/28/10. The medium simply cannot continue to sustain the current rate of growth without it's efficiency and effectiveness being severely diluted. I personally think it already has been diluted. I'll continue to do move forward with the plan, but only because of the SERP benefits.

usally 1 tweet a day, 13k+ followers. i dont push any products currently.

I stoped my twitter followers services... cos there is no result at all... people even complain after some time that i used my own bots to get the work done, however all the work was completed 100% manual and checking every single person.. Twitter is junk.. I will say if you want to build followers then go for digg or something like...

I'm not even sure why Damian is in this thread (I have him on ignore), but I would say that like most things in this business...he doesn't have any actual experience doing any of this.

We're friends with lots of the "porn star" girls in the biz. I know some of them whose husbands do their tweeting. I know some of them who have paid for a hundred thousand "followers" (and were passing on the info to us to do the same...but we weren't looking for that from Twitter).

And I know some girls who are some of the most legendary names from the business who only have a few thousand followers because they do it honestly.

And when we or some of the other girls tweet something business related (such as CM about to go on Live Cam, or the latest update, or a personal appearance, etc.) we see them in the room on cams (they tell her "I'm so and so from Twitter or Facebook or Tumblr or Digg"). They identify themselves when they join the website (they can write directly to CM inside the members area and tell her how they joined and why). And just like a week ago when we went out to see Paul McCartney at the MGM here in Vegas: She tweeted it and we met a half dozen or so fans at MGM that had seen the tweet and were in town. Also when we left MGM after the show and went to the RIO she tweeted that as well. We walked into the RIO and within 15 minutes she had 3 fans buying her drinks at the I-Bar who follow her on Twitter and saw that tweet on their cell phones.

It's great marketing. Because everyone of the guys took cellphone pics with her at MGM and the RIO. And they all gushed about it. And two of them joined that night. Then they put the pics up on their facebooks, etc. and it's just good natural organic marketing.

And no, none of that works for an adult company. It has to be the actual girl herself.

You have to reply to your twitter followers and build up a relationship with them if you are going to keep them interested in what you are doing. You can't just rely on posting links and retweeting.

Muppets buying followers or doing follow for follow are just wasting their time and money. Minimal value may be achieved for seo purposes, yet again only if there are resulting retweets that are natural.

I really doubt thousands of dormant indian and philippino accounts created en masse will do any more than get you indexed.
