That super exciting game with so many stops and periods of completely nothing happening. So they can get the adverts in.
When something does happen it's over in 5-10 seconds. Soccer is 90 minutes of action. American football, never timed it. I fall asleep waiting for something to really happen. |

Lmao!! I'm gonna agree with you on this. There is a comedian Billy Connely that talks about this. Americans have zero attention span unless there are over 40 points being scored (basketball and football). You don't like soccer because you don't understand it.

Closely missed shots in soccer are usually more exciting than anticlimactic 1 yard TD plunges worth 6 points and they are almost always more exciting than FGs which are worth 3 points.

You wait 90 mins and nothing happens. 91st min your team score, Its been building for so long the euphoria is potent.
The history between clubs also adds to it. I hated football until I was 14 years old. The year before that, on my way home from a friends house I got my handsome young face stamped on by group of "grown adult" Leeds united fans, was in hospital for three days. From that day on I was hooked. Ah the good old days. |

Gotta love it when soccer playing, pink panty wearing sissies "take dives". I grew up playing full contact football like other boys who were born with a pair of actual testicles and of course had the opinion that soccer was a sport for little girls and for boys who were sissies. After spending several years traveling and living in other countries/cultures I really wanted to give the sport a chance in my mind but after seeing sissies fall down on the field and proceed to act like drama queens when they were not even touched I realized that I had been raised properly. I did enjoy watching the game today with my 2 year old daughter as she is already taking up the sport. However I will be teaching my daughter that behavior displayed in these videos is among the most vile forms of sissyness and dishonor that has ever existed.
Yes, this is the end of the thread. No way you guys can defend what you are about to see. https://youtube.com/watch?v=VzeKi...eature=related https://youtube.com/watch?v=Ioyt2...eature=related https://youtube.com/watch?v=UgfRC...eature=related https://youtube.com/watch?v=gzmy7fcv9U8&NR=1 This Guy The Epitome Of Soccer Sissies? http://www.totalprosports.com/2011/0...issies-videoIs Don?t get me wrong here. I enjoy watching the sport, but there is only so much flopping and diving that I can stand to watch before I have had enough. And after watching this embarrassing display, I think I have had enough. For starters, I am not even sure you can classify this as a dive in the first place. After all, it was his teammate who hit him in the face during their goal celebration, therefore, he clearly wasn?t trying to get the referee to call a foul. So does that mean he was seriously hurt by that sorry excuse for a punch to the face? Perhaps, but even if it was enough to give him a shiner, does he seriously require the use of a stretcher to help him off the pitch? I wont go so far as to say that all soccer players are sissies, but what I will say is that the biggest sissies in sports can be found playing the game of soccer. This video serves as evidence of such a statement. Soccer: A sport for sissies? http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...rt-for-sissies Enough is enough. Last night I was with some of my boys, watching the Montreal-Boston hockey playoffs game, and we were talking about Kovalev faking an injury in an earlier season. He tried to get a stoppage in play for the benefit of his team. One of my friends decided to leave some input [being a Montreal fan, he wasn't too happy with us calling out Kovalev] and said, "At least hockey is not a sissy sport like soccer". Ordinarily, I couldn't care less for the soccer haters on this side of the Atlantic, who only call it 'soccer' because they already have a 'football'. And having lived in Canada for the better part of the past decade, I know how passionate Canadians are about their hockey. But what my buddy said after his initial statement, shocked and angered me even more. "In soccer you are actually encouraged to dive. Soccer is such a pussy sport, where they cry every time they fall, and coaches teach players when they are young how to dive properly. Hockey is a real sport, a sport for tough guys." I, in my semi-plastered state from drinking a few more than one Labatt Blue, decided to defend the sport that I have played since I learned to walk. "How can you even compare soccer...football...to hockey? Hockey is a faster game played at break-neck speeds on a surface that is harder on the body, use sticks, and play with a solid rubber puck that could break a bone. Therefore, you would need protective equipment, not because you're a tough guy, but because if you wanted to keep playing the bloody game you would have to protect your bloody self from getting hurt." "Besides, football...soccer...has it's own bloody share of tough guy moments. We have our bloody instigators, we have our sodding assholes, and we do have those wankers that are moronic enough to dive on the pitch. Basketball players get called for touching an opponent's hand or shoulder barging, and rightly so. Imagine if you left your bloody feet only to be hit mid-air. You wouldn't bloody well enjoy your landing." Another hockey fan decided to quote YouTube and state that there was a video on the site that showed coaches training young kids to dive. I simply said that anyone basing their opinion on something they saw on YouTube was a wanker anyway. What is it with the West in thinking that soccer is not a man's game? Is it for this precise purpose soccer never made any strides in the American and Canadian market? It is understood that soccer will never overtake the three main American games: Baseball, American Football, and Basketball. But the MLS is quickly churning out more and more interest. Parents seeing their kids getting beaten up on the ice are turning to soccer as a less violent method of sport and fitness. I honestly believe that soccer players are angrier than hockey players. Soccer is a sport played on the feet, by the feet. There is a reason we wear shin guards and ankle guards. If hockey is so tough, why are hockey players covering themselves up so much? Let's see them play with just shin pads! It is idiotic and baseless thinking such as my buddy's that gives the sport a negative image in the West, and it needs to stop. Besides football...soccer...fans will ALWAYS be more radical than hockey fans. I should take one of these hockey fanatics to a Millwall game someday... My soccer-hating buddy asked me why soccer players don't wear more equipment so that they can be more physical. I gave him the example of a goalkeeper such as myself. I hate wearing a jock since it impedes my movement. I can't wear a mouth guard since I have to marshal my defence, and I can't wear body armour because I need freedom of movement. Then I showed him a video of Gatusso's and Eduardo's injury... |

I've always been a fan of American football, and still am, but I've become less and less interested over the years and have evolved to largely prefer soccer. Here's a step by step of how I became I soccer fan.
Summer of 1997 Studied in France. Summer of 1998 Watched a lot of the World Cup. It was in France, reminded me of the badass time I had during the previous summer, and that particular team had a lot of personality. It was pretty exciting to see them win and to watch footage of the celebration on Champs-Elysees. By the end of the Cup,though, it would have been a stretch to say that I was even a casual fan of the game. Summer 2002 Because the WC was in Korea/Japan, a lot of NYC bars were granted special permits to stay open all night which made for some pretty fun times. England-Argentina and Ireland-Germany were great matches, but the best night was watching England-Brazil at a Brazilian bar (even though I was rooting for England, I knew a lot of Brazilians) and then going to a pub to watch US-Germany. It was just an all around fun experience even though both the US and England lost. Those were the only four matches I remember seeing. I know that I was out watching some of the others, but it's all a bit hazy. At the end of the tournament, I appreciated the game more and I do feel as if it was a 'step' in my evolution as a fan of the game, but I think it was more about going out and having fun. Summer 2006 Before the WC, I wanted to do a bracket and be more proactive in watching the matches, but because a bunch of my friends either worked in investment banking or just somehow had a lot of money, my only option was to pay $1000 to join a pool of around 50 people. Even though I made good money relative to the rest of the world, it didn't seem like it because I spent a lot on rent to live in the West Village, went out a lot, and hung out with people that had way more money than I did. Not only that, but I didn't even know much about any of the teams before writing the check. So I felt obligated to do a bunch of research and learn a lot about all the teams and players. After all that research, though, I just said fuck it and picked France to win despite the fact that probably 5 or 6 teams had better odds. I watched as much of the group stage as possible and think a big step in my evolution as a fan happened when I instinctively made fun of a friend of mine and questioned his heterosexuality after he mentioned that he was a big fan of C. Ronaldo.lol Anyway, by that time, and completely unrelated to soccer, I had decided that most of the Brazilians that hung out with my group of friends were loud and obnoxious and that I didn't really like them. Not only the ones in the city, but there was also a big group of Brazilian girls who worked as au pairs in Princeton and they would come up to the city almost every weekend. Even though most of them were pretty hot, they still annoyed the fuck out of me and I did not like having them around. Sure enough, though, when France and Brazil played in the quarterfinals,I found myself at a Brazilian bar with a bunch of irritating Brazilians. The C. Ronaldo fan friend of mine was there too and he actually thought it was badass when Rooney got sent off in the earlier game. That really pissed me off. Not just because I thought Ronaldo was a stupid cunt, but also because I had picked Netherlands to play in the semifinals against France and the the majority of the people in my $1000 pool had picked Brazil to reach the final by beating Portugal in the semis. I was pretty much pissed at the world up until the match started. During the match, the Brazilian contingent was just as loud, annoying, and overconfident as I thought they'd be, but I was honestly so focused on the game itself that I barely even noticed. France played such a beautiful, masterful game and Zidane put on a surreal, truly unbelievable performance. It was was like watching art in motion. From that point on I've been a fan, but I don't think I became a really big fan until watching a lot of the Champions League matches during the year that Man U beat Chelsea. There was also a tight race for premiership title that year and it was great to see Clint Dempsey and Fulham fight of relegation. So, if anyone has ever been curious as to how an American can become a soccer fan, there you have it.

First you tell us about how you're a real man with testicles, that soccer is for sissies, and that you were raised properly. That's all fine and dandy. Everyone is certainly entitled to have their own opinions. What's funny is that you then you proceed to unveil a clip from the Spanish 4th Division as your 'smoking gun'. The trump card which undoubtedly proves your point. Then, just in case the clip wasn't enough evidence to support your point, you try to remove all doubt by closing your argument with a blog post which argues that soccer is actually not for sissies. That could possibly be the most poorly constructed argument I have ever seen.

Not just a bunch of oversized idiots running around a field bashing into each other. |
