Anyone else been getting a higher level of scam/extortion phone calls lately?

I'm sure many of you know the new scam out there already.

People call your phone and try to have you call them back or they are "pressing charges" and "Fbi will arrest you" if you don't call back type deal. Its a common scam to "settle" with them under duress.

It seems to have reached an all time high lately. Lots of my friends have reported getting these calls too, so it must be just on fire like the Nigerian email scams of the 2000's.

They are normally of Indian, Thai, or Philipino decent, as determined by their accents, and weird pauses in the phone lines from overseas calling.

This particular one this morning demanded I call back, and if I didn't "i had better be careful of myself". LOL.

Since I'm pretty much a cash based character, I can assume that they got my number from any of the millions of forms I fill out on a daily basis. I maintain a throwaway phone that I use just for Internet crap signups, etc.

The ones that have called me have not been very convincing, I wonder what type actually falls for it? I'm picturing the guy "consequences will never be the same guy" as the type of person they get to give them money.

Any one else experiencing this new phishing scam first hand?

Heres some news I found on it: http://www.pro8news.com/news/local/P...129839573.html

I was about to post the same thing... However, I screen all my calls. If they wont identify themselves into the ansaphone, then they can go away. Legit people know this and say 'Hey, its Tom - Pick up the phone mate' or stuff and I do...

But any of the nuiscance calls - auto dialed etc hang up before the ansaphone finishes saying 'Leave a message' so thats fine by me.

I don't answer any calls on the "goofball" phone as I call it. It sits on a shelf in my house and I check the calls and VMs maybe once a month. This time I had three of these calls. What it means is don't ever ever ever submit real information to any forms on the internet. The only place I use this phone number is in Internet forms. Something to remind people of. Get a HO phone for your Internet form filling.

times are tough man, people are relying on whatever they can do to pay the bills

I got a call the other day saying I won a $100 gas card and just needed to supply them with my info. Me, being a smart fella, knew it was impossible for me to win something that I didnt enter, so I wanted to hear this scam.

They asked questions about verifying my info, name, address, blah blah blah so I gave them all fake info. Then they said I had to pay $3 for shipping costs and wanted a credit card number, but before that, they wanted to create an account for me with a username and password. So i gave them some BS username and for a password they said to use your mothers maiden name

I wonder how many people they got on this? With this info, you can call the bank and request a new card sent out to a new address.

I know its crazy. I constantly warn my mom about this kind of thing. Thankfully my grandparents don't go on the web, and they barely even answer a phone.

Attention,
After proper and several investigations and research at Western Union and MoneyGram Office, we found your name

you have truly been swindled by those unscrupulous persons by sending money to them through Western Union/MoneyGram in the course of getting one fund or the other that is not real, right now we are working hand in hand with Western Union to track every fraudsters down, do not respond to their e-mails, letters and phone calls any longer as they are scammers and you should be very careful to avoid being a victim to fraudsters any longer because they have nothing to offer you but to rip-off what you have worked earnestly hard to earn.
In this regard a meeting was held between the Board of Directors of The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and as a consequence of our investigations it was agreed that the sum of Six Hundred Thousand US Dollars (US$600,000.00) should be transferred to you out of the funds that Federal Government of Nigeria has set aside as a compensation to everyone who have by one way or the other sent money to fraudsters in Nigeria.
***Please note that we will no longer be liable for any loss, cost or expense whatsoever, suffered or incurred by You in connection with the fraudsters.
Be warned!
We have deposited your fund at Western Union Money Transfer agent location EMS Post office Lagos, Nigeria.
We have submitted your details to them so that your fund can be transferred to you. We have paid the Registration and Transfer fees and for security reasons we have also insured your fund to avoid misappropriation.

************************************************** ************************************************** **************
Please note that e-mails, letters and phone calls are currently been made to unsuspecting persons by fraudsters
claiming to have access to their funds. Everyday, people throughout the world are falling victim to scams of one
way or the other. It could be an unexpected prize draw or lottery win, or a chance to invest in an exciting new
money-making or investment programme . In the circumstance, we unreservedly advice you to dissociate yourself
from all correspondence and transactions entered into based on evidently fraudulent and fictitious claims.

we get hit by the indians here in au

the popular one at that moment is this

you randomly phone people and tell them they have a problem with their pc

stupid people give them remote access and pay for a 'lifetime warranty' to prevent such 'problems' occuring again
