I've got a spare PC that I want to install Linux on. I have NO experience whatsoever with this OS and am hoping that maybe someone here can point me in the right direction. What's a good starting point?

Go to Debian's web site and download the 4 disk floppy install. They have doc's on the site. Easiest OS to do, APT-GET is your friend.

Buy the CD. Put it in the CD-ROM. Reboot. Follow Instructions on the screen.

(1) Go with RedHat 8.0. Easy install, #1 selling (by far) and best supported. Download or buy a legal copy on Ebay for around $5 if you don't have cable/dsl.

(2) Pop in CD. Boot and follow Instructions.

I recomend Mandrake Linux for a newbies. It's the same as Debian and havent Red Hat security holes.

It's an older PC (PII) with a not so big hard drive...should I dump Windows prior?

If you don't need a second OS fdisk the drive and start fresh. Redhat on a small drive may be a pain, Debian has a small footprint, FreeBSD is one of the smallest.

We had an old box with a 1/2 gig drive, loaded FreeBSD for DNS until we got better boxes up. Ran great.

Edit wrong size drive quoted.

Thanks. I think I'm gonna give Mandrake a spin. Any thoughts on that. I've got the specs to be able to run.

Mandrake is good for desktop use. Would definately recommend redhat/mandrake over debian for a newb. Installing RedHat 8.0 is easier than installing win2k, hands down.

All I can tell you is it took my webmaster and another two weeks to get ours working correctly.

The main frame is on Linux and the four others, five when I have my laptop there, all run on Windows pro and we had a lot of problems getting them to transfer documents from one to another desk top.

My webmaster rocks.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I've already downloaded Mandrake and am burning the discs as we speack, while dumping Windows from the existing disc.

Amazed some of you can tie your shoes.

Charly: 2 weeks to get linux running isn't a good thing, should take
2 hours.

mandrake is based on rh(and filed chapter 11). go woth rh or debian. If total newbie, go with rh 8, be aware that you will want to roll
apache 2.0 back to 1.3.x. apache 2, while it works fine, can be
a pain to build other modules with. (php,mysql,etc) Debian is great,
had a great package management system, is NOT for the totally new.

As for footprint, if you know what you are doing you can make any distro small, or build you own. One final thing, if you put this
box online, make sure its secure if you have ports open. If you don't know how to secure it, don't put it online.

Thanks toddler...I just wanted something new to play with. I've got no experience, and want to check it out for myself, since I've got this spare PC sitting here doing nothing.

So do I. There are things coming down the pipes from them that just piss me off. 'advanced server' is one of them, and more expensive
than 2k server(or AS). I run close to 90 linux boxes now, and more
to come. its a 7.3 base with heavy tweaks, rh wants us to move

If you're new to Linux, definitely go with RedHat or Mandrake. Move on to Debian or Slackware later on (or, for other *nix OS's FreeBSD or OpenBSD).

I just ordered Mandrake 9.0 and Debian 3.0 r1. Both are the newest releases.
The reason I ordered the CD instead of downloading them is simple.
Mandrake is 3 CD's and Debian is 7 CD's
I'm on dial up so it would take me days to download the CD's.
The CD's are cheap anyway at $9 for Mandrake 9.0 and $21 for Debian 3.0 r1

Both are the offcial releases.

I've heard this before, but I've been running apache 2 with mysql, SSL, etc for a few months now without any problems whatsoever.

I ran into large issues with GD and imagemagick plus php. due to time issues, it was faster for me to dd a good image and not fuck with it. Problems were more with rh8 than apache 2 though
