If you are unable to work for anyone ever? It reveals more of a character flaw in you than it showcases your success in business...

What if you were to be involved in a huge merger or partnership? You would have to partner up with other people, other people that could be majority investors.. if you couldn't work with them how useless would you be then?

Get real, the guy stole company information.
It's just a side note that he used the computer.
He could have broken into a file cabinet and still have the same charges.

Viewing sports scores is wasting time but it's not stealing company secrets which is
clearly illegal.

Anyway, 1 million employees would already be fired if checking sports scores was
considered.

If you are caught stealing then you should be punished for your crime, no doubt. My issue is I hate the man. I rebel against authority, and I don't care to be micro-managed.

The law that was discussed in the original article is invasive, and very big brothery. It reminds me why I run my own business, and it reinforces my aversion to ever wanting to ever work for someone else ever again.

Partnerships and freelance projects are not the same as punching a time card for someone else, and working in THEIR location, under THEIR control and rules.

Not sure why what I said is controversial, especially here on a board called GFY, populated by (mostly) rebellious individuals, but hey, to each his own.

My take on this issue is that if you accept a job offer you have to agree to certain things. If a company does not allow their employees to do personal things on company computers especially during office hours then it is their right. They own those computers and the connection it is using as well as paying for the employees time. Yes it would be tempting to sneak a peek at sports scores or maybe even search for a little porn during a long grinding day but that does not negate what the employee agreed to while accepting the job. I am not horribly fond of huge corporations but if you agree to follow the rules to get that paycheck each week then I think it is perfectly reasonable for an employer to enforce their rules.

and then later tells the tale of an ex-employee who worked with existing employees to steal company information?

Maybe checking sports scores and placing illegal bets from an office computer might land you in the slammer. No business is going to sue an employee unless there was significant damage done to the company.

No doubt. I just don't have that level of submissiveness in me, so I need to be self-employed. I'm not saying I am a better person than the mindless simpleton, employed as a cog in the machine.

Most people crave order and stability, so it's all good. For myself however, I just can't personally handle it. No offense to those who can and do.
