His only mistake was not writing "this was all a joke" at the end, instead of using a big word like "satire" which was obviously missed (or misunderstood) by some of the article's critics, fanning a flame that didn't need to be there.

I'm only sticking my big nose in because some of my articles / positions have been equally misrepresented or misunderstood, so I understand how "unfair" all the commotion is.

A few words on satire (and those who don't get it) from an interview by The AV Club with one of the very best satirists of our times, the great Tom Lehrer:

Also, the literary analogy with Swift's "A modest proposal" is most definitely wasted on most people here, who for the most part have probably never read it and even less so understood it.
